Heard about the Schmidt suspension. Thinking it's a 1 time thing and that he learned his lesson.

I like Wheeler but man is that a lot to give to a 33 year old.
at least Ehlers and Scheifele are signed long term.
just if you give a 20 goal scorer 8 mill this year, what do you give a 40 goal scorer next year? (Laine is RFA)

also from capfriendly this morning
how the fuck is Detroit over the cap already? they are already $3.2m into LTIR even without Zetterberg's bad case of Hossatosis. 2 more players to add to roster, too.

Wheeler reminds me of Marleau, he certainly doesn't seem to be slowing down and the hands seem to be just as good as ever. That said, once they go, they seem to be gone forever. It's a risky contract, but it also sends the signal that the Jets are serious about winning it all.

I think this is the major factor. He is under 35 so if he retires in 3 years with a "skin condition" it won't hurt them.

Detroit has been horribly managed the last few years and yet "Mr. I"'s kids still kept Holland around. There are 6 players on that team making in the $3 mil range and 10 players making more than that. And this is after they suckered GMGM into making yet another god-awful trade in giving up a 1st/2nd/3rd for Tatar and his $5.3 mil for 3 more years.

Why the fuck did they re-sign Mike Green lol

Don't they have to wait until the season starts to account Franzen's contract to LTIR?

That one is funny.

Their defense avg salary next year: 3.89 Million per year.
Average age: 32

Compare that to another team with a suspect defense in cap hell the Penguins
Avg Salary: 3.85 million per year
Average age: 27.5

I looked at Detroit as a team the Devils could take advantage of capwise, I'm not even sure who we could add that's an upgrade over what we currently have.

I mean, I hate the Marleau contract and know it almost assuredly is going to bite us in the ass in 19-20 but at least 2 of those 3 years the cap hit was irrelevant because the Leafs had the space. In year one of Wheeler's deal the Jets now have to squeeze Laine, Connor, Trouba, Morrissey and 7 other roster pieces into $27-30 mil.

With all that considered I probably would've just given it a good go this season and let Wheeler walk.

Come on who doesn't want a player on their team with a last name with no vowels!

It's a tough call because I consider Wheeler the heart and soul of that team and he's still an effective player - It's always a tricky balancing act between how much of this contract is rewarding part performance and how much is future performance.

It gets better, every last one has some form of NTC.

I went to look at their team to see if we could offer a trade to help them relieve their cap issues and I'm not sure there is one player I would take at their current salary.

Maybe Athiansou @ 3m. 33 points last year. We just signed Riley Nash for 2.75 and he got 41.

Maybe not.

Wheeler's deal is good in terms of length but that money #'s a million per yr. to much for me.

So long, DGB. I'll miss your weekly stuff.

Athletic is such a weird model. I get it from a "random blogger who wants a slightly better paid gig" point of view. I don't get it from a "why the fuck would I pay to read opinion pieces, which have been free for decades, now?" point of view.

I don't understand what you mean. I personally love the idea of paying 9 bucks a months to listen to Aaron Portzline repeat the things the voices in his head tell him about the Panarin situation.
