I'd also like to get a handle on why so many people hate DMB, so if you're in that camp, speak up.

I’m curious about that as well. I saw them in concert literally the day after LeRoi died and it was a really good show. I don’t understand why so many people hate them other than it’s somehow fashionable to do so.

Several years ago, I had a really bad, scary trip on a brownie. I seriously wished for death and it made me swear off pot in any form. I was legit traumatized.

Several years after that, a friend invited me to a DMB concert. No opinion on them, really. But it was a group of friends, so I thought- "Eh, it's a concert with friends. How bad could it be?" A few songs in, I noticed some people near me smoking a joint and they offered me some. I toked so hard on that shit, just hoping for flashbacks and a quick death.

I used to be a big fan back in high school and dated a girl in college who liked them even more. The last show I went to of his was Dave and Friends at Penn State my....junior year?

I got away from them as time went on, but still listened to their new albums when it came out. For the most part, I still liked them and they music was still good. They are future Rock and Roll Hall of Famers even though there are people out there who will say they suck. Everyone has their own tastes.

That said, their new album, is again, not bad. Listenable, but not something I put on when I am hanging around the house.

I did find this article a couple months ago that was pretty good.

What Would You Say (To A Critical Re-Evaluation Of Dave Matthews)

The the record reflect that dudes that pretend to be broads on the internets do not like Dave Matthews Band.

So, I used to be a pretty big fan, but around the release Stand Up, I started to lose interest. I think it's because my musical interests were expanding pretty rapidly into jazz at that time, and I also witnessed a few seedy encounters at DMB shows that probably facilitated my disconnection from that scene.

So I have a cursory knowledge of Stand Up, and practically nothing of subsequent albums.

In July and August, Sirius/XM has been running a Dave Matthews Band Channel where they're playing the band's studio works, other artists that have influenced the band members (Sly, Wayne Shorter, Tool, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley), live cuts from the band's past and, most enjoyably for me, full live concerts from their current tour.

Since I stopped following the band, their line up has changed quite a bit. LeRoi Moore (sax) passed away, and they brought in Jeff Coffin to play sax, added Rashawn Ross on trumpet, and Buddy Strong on keys. Tim Reynolds, who was always more of a stunt guitarist for the band, seems to be taking a much more active roll in the band. Boyd Tinsley, the violinist was shitcanned right before the start of this tour, when news broke of him continually sexually harassing a dude despite being married to a broad.

After I heard about Tinsley, I wanted to tune into the station to hear what they'd sound like without a somewhat-defining violin presence in the band. I have to say, I really like their live sound now much better than what it used to be. It's a much more sophisticated sound I feel. I thought the violin would be missed, but with the addition of the trumpet and keys, I didn't miss it at all.

I'm not saying that losing the violin is what made the band sound better, because those other pieces were there before it was gone, I'm just saying I don't miss it and if I were them, I wouldn't look for a replacement - I'd just keep his share of the cabbage.

Few seedy encounters?? Like what?

I used to be into them back during high school and early twenties. I still like them ok, but haven't really kept up with them in many years and have no idea about any of their "newer" stuff. But I've seen them live on 3 different occasions with friends who were die-hard DMB heads (at the time), and all three concerts were a blast. That's why I'm curious by your seedy encounters comment...

I see you've developed a stutter. Maybe if you shove the dildo up your butt just a teense more, it will tickle your brain and get rid of it for you. :suds:

I saw a couple of fights, and I saw a guy literally piss on the guy and girl in the seats in front of him - three entirely separate incidents.

I go to watch musicians because I want to connect to the live music. Shit like that tends to fuck that up for me.

Similar thing happened with me and Phish. Haven't seen them live since I saw a big fight.

It's not that I blame the bands, but more that the crowds ruined what those shows previously meant to me. I won't go to see the new Grateful Dead despite generally favorable reviews because I don't want my experiences of real Dead shows tainted.

That may be a little strange, but that's my deal.

I too don’t get the hate for them, but I also don’t get the hardcore fans either.

I prefer small venue shows these days, but festivals and lawn seats are a thing of the past to me. Too many drunks just passed out or making a scene. I will pay extra for a seat.

Wow, a fight at a phish show?? I would never imagine a bunch of dirty wookies duking it out while their God Trey Anastasio prattled on with his guitar.

In case you can't tell, I can't stand phish and bands like phish lol

Word.

I was exposed to Phish early -- I anticipated the release of Picture of Nectar -- and it was a very peaceful crowd. As their popularity grew, so did the shows. The big fight I saw was at a big show, and it looked like a frat deal to me. It was just grim.

They're both jam bands, but the similarities more or less end there.

I assume you've got Sirius/XM. Check out the DMB channel #30. Every Friday night, they live broadcast the show from the tour. I've heard some cool stuff.

Phish is definitely trippier than DMB, but I would still categorize them together. DMB is just more poppy and therefore more mainstream.

I can see what you're saying.

From my perspective, the two have very distinctive feels, but there is some overlap. Dave Matthews, to me, is quite a bit darker and grinding, while Phish is much lighter, often silly even.

The musicianship in both bands is great, and they both jam songs out, so I can see where you're coming from.

there are likely Phish fans who look down on DMB fans, so I can understand that they aren't the same thing, but they can both play a song that will go on for 20 minutes.

on a couple occasions I have thought about going to another DMB show. It's been so long and I bet they are still a pretty good time.
