thats a lot of people. i get that its just a tryout and all that but what if say tootoo really tears it up out there. your going to sign him to a deal and already have someone signed in that spot? just seems it creates unnecessary drama

If that's the case it's a good problem to have.

I remember a few years back I thought Mike Komisarek was going to be a stud, then he signed for big money in Toronto (have they overtaken the Rangers as the team where careers go to die?).

I'm curious why these guys are going for tryouts with a team that doesn't really have spots for them? What's the mentality and logic there?

If I'm a vet that's hoping for a shot, I would absolutely try out with the Devils. Spot or no, they seem to sign a bunch of dead weight. That's not a scathing criticism or anything like that. But being young on this team is basically strike one and two these days.

So there are a number of guys that are considered locks. Anybody have a bold prediction for a prospect or fringe guy that will surprise and make the team? If Matteau played lights out in camp and preseason would he still be sent to Albany?

I could see him playing some nice 4th line time. Especially if Clowe cant go and they need a power forward type

Until they move a forward, only person I see making it would be Severson/Kinkaid.

Right now, I see Gomez signing and being in lineup first regular season game.
Gelinas and Merrill to also make squad with Larsson wearing a suit first few games.

Would be people be ok with not having a top line of Cammi-Zajac-Jagr? Do we 100% go with the top 3 guys there or do we mix up the lines? Something like:

Cammi-Henrique-Ryder
Havlat-Elias-Jagr
Ruutu-Zajac-Zubrus/Brunner/Clowe?

I don't know. It's not an easy call. I'm of a mind to say stack that top line because otherwise I think you dilute the talent level and none of the lines is really dangerous.

I agree with cal. This team was lucky to get the season they did from jägr without that season they are more then 5pts from a playoff spot. Wheels are going to fall off this season when he has half the year he does and injuries happen.

Speaking of injuries, Merrill collided with unsigned Fedotenko today and had to be helped off ice. Hope it's nothing.

Not surprising considering they have 458 guys in camp.

I think they know what they're doing with the forwards. Injury risk is high but there is no longer a Kovalchuk or Parise that would destroy the team if they go down. Zajac is the closest and he's been one of the healthiest guys in the NHL.

Meanwhile, having tons of guys come to training camp means that they can likely find a short notice sub that is already familiar with the system.

My main concern is that they only have 1 guy that can win a faceoff.

If Darcy & Kelly Zajac can score in shootouts I say give them a spot on the roster.

there ya go! next time aim for a forward and he might "earn" a spot by default. still dont get why these clowns were invited to camp.

Scrimmage today and went to shootout.
From the TG site

The Red Team defeated the White Team 6-5 in a shootout. They played two 20-minute periods and a 10-minute third period followed by a five-round shootout.

Ryane Clowe was the only one to score in the shootout, beating Cory Schneider to the stick side in the third round. Scott Wedgwood stopped, Mike Cammalleri, Travis Zajac (post), Jaromir Jagr, Ryan Carter and Andy Greene.
