Mercer is here to stay, then. Good. I kind of like the dynamic having both Mercer and Barmes on the roster provides right now until Mercer takes over full time next year.

good decision. would have been disappointed if they brought mcdonald back. inge is a good veteran presence who can catch in an emergency. mcdonald was limited fielder and an 0-3 when he played. mercer hsa improved a lot since last year and earned this spot. seems like he has passed up darnaud thru the end of 13.

Agreed,

I like Mercer being here. I think it is easy to see he is being groomed for the Job next spring.

Heard this stat during the broadcast, last night

Since June 11, 2012 the home run leader in the National League since that date one year ago is Pedro Alvarez with 36 dingers.

Basically he is a young Adam Dunn without the walks!

Here is an interesting stat as the dogfight in the NL central continues:

record against >.500
STL - 20-13
CIN - 10-18:whistle:
PIT - 18-12

record against <.500
STL - 22-10
CIN - 30-8
PIT - 21-14

Looks like Dusty's Reds don't hold much water when they go against quality competition. Reds have also only played 3 games against the NL west, which.. other than the Central, appears to have more quality than the NL East.

send zagurski, then watson then reid.
get back gomez, wandy, burnett.
black will come up if morton not really healthy or effective enough.

what happens IF, and a big IF, we have all the following healthy and effective at the same time:
Burnett, Wandy, Locke, Liriano, Cole, Morton. (is morton in the pen with Gomez)
BP = Grilli, Melancon, Wilson, Mazzaro, Morris, Gomez, (Hughes, Black, Reid, Watson)

Starting pitching injuries are beginning to mount. This is not good. We're now down our #1 and #2 in AJ and Wandy. Well, I guess it's time to give Andy Oliver a shot. Aside from a huge amount of walks, he has pretty solid numbers at Indy.

I saw that Gomez had a rehab start last nite, and from all reports came out unscathed.

Let's just hope that Burnett only needs the minimum time on the DL.. If it is a pulled calf muscle..Hopefully a few days of rest will be just what he needs.

Nice to see that Gomez might be ready... But where the heck is McDonald? I never thought he would be out this long.

McDonald is currently pitching like hot garbage at Indianapolis, and by the sounds of the gm, may not make it back to the Pirates 25 man roster.

In response to the SP question, having seen Cole twice he needs time in AAA. He needs to work on his secondary pitches. Right now he has no way to get out of jams. He needs to figure out how to strike hitters out when he needs to and right now he can't. He could develop that in the majors, but given the choice I would prefer to see it done in the minors.

he needs to throw more inside and at the letters with his heat,
seems like it was mostly down the middle at the knees.
nice spot in general but the hitters were digging in knowing that he wasnt throwing inside or high.
if you have trouble catching up with the pitch, easiest pitch is outside, or low.
adrian gonzalez showed that yesterday. he was never going to get around on the inside pitch, but was just sitting on the outside pitches for his first 3 ABs.
