Kendall Hunter - RB - 49ers

49ers RB Kendall Hunter rushed three times for 13 yards in Sunday night's third preseason game.

He exploded up the middle for 15 yards on his first carry, and was bottled up on his next two at the line of scrimmage. The 49ers had seen enough, pulling Hunter and replacing him with LaMichael James. As confirmed by trusty beat reporter Matt Maiocco, Hunter has San Francisco's No. 2 running back job wrapped up. He's a strong handcuff and late-round pick for Frank Gore owners.

Colin Kaepernick - QB - 49ers

Colin Kaepernick completed 7-of-13 passes for 72 yards and a touchdown in the 49ers' third preseason game Sunday night.

He only has one rush in August, gaining six yards in the exhibition opener. Kaepernick has played as sparingly as any starting quarterback in the league during the preseason, perhaps in an effort by Jim Harbaugh to disguise what's coming when the real thing begins. Through three preseason games, Kap has completed 12-of-19 throws (63.2 percent) for 107 yards (5.63 YPA), one touchdown, and no picks. Despite a limited supporting cast on paper, Kaepernick as high a ceiling as any quarterback in football.

LaMichael James - RB - 49ers

Coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed the 49ers expect LaMichael James to be "fine" after Sunday night's elbow injury.

"I think LaMichael's fine," Harbaugh assured. "LaMichael's fine. He's going through something with his elbow." James appeared to only bang the elbow. He remains on track to begin the season as the Niners' No. 3 running back.

Scott Tolzien - QB - Free Agent

49ers waived QB Scott Tolzien.

The Niners were intrigued by Tolzien's "headiness" and "moxie," but he lacked NFL-caliber tangible qualities. San Francisco will move forward -- for now -- with Colt McCoy, B.J. Daniels, and Seneca Wallace behind Colin Kaepernick.

Lawrence Okoye - DL - 49ers

49ers waived/injured DL Lawrence Okoye and Lamar Divens.

A former rugby player and track star, Okoye was fully expected to wind up on the practice squad, but will instead spend the year on injured reserve if/when he clears waivers. He'll presumably make another long-shot roster bid next summer. Divens hasn't appeared in a game since 2010.

Eric Reid - DB - 49ers

First-round pick Eric Reid has been named the 49ers' starting free safety.

That had been the expectation since the 49ers traded up to select Reid in April's draft. Reid is expected to stay back in center field while SS Donte Whitner patrols closer to the line of scrimmage.

Michael Crabtree - WR - 49ers

49ers placed WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles') on reserve/PUP.

It's a mere procedural move. Crabtree is out until at least Week 11 after blowing out his heel in May. We won't have a real read on his ability to return and contribute over the season's final month until October.

Tank Carradine - DL - 49ers

49ers placed DE Tank Carradine (ACL surgery), DE Quinton Dial (undisclosed), OT Luke Marquardt (foot) and CB Eric Wright (undisclosed) on the reserve/NFI list.

The NFI list works just like the PUP list, meaning none of the four will be eligible to return until Week 7. Carradine wasn't close to practicing as of three weeks ago, and could spend the entire season stashed away. The 49ers didn't disclose Wright's injury upon signing him August 8. We haven't heard a peep on Dial since May.

Oh good! I didn't expect him to make the roster as a rookie, but it'd be nice to see what he can do / learn in a year & see if next year he can turn into a legitimate NFL player.

Patrick Willis - LB - 49ers

49ers ILB Patrick Willis (broken hand) has resumed practicing, and remains on pace to start in next week's opener.

Coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed as much Tuesday. Willis has missed just four games in six seasons.

Nnamdi Asomugha - DB - 49ers

Nnamdi Asomugha has won the No. 3 corner job in San Francisco.

After a slow start to camp that saw Asomugha get called out by defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, he's come on strong. Chris Culliver went down with a torn ACL and Asomugha has subsequently beaten out Tramaine Brock. It's a major role for the Niners as Culliver played on 64 percent of their defensive snaps in 2012. Asomugha was routinely roasted in Philly last year, grading out 101st of 113 qualifiers in ProFootballFocus' grades.

Vernon Davis - TE - 49ers

Vernon Davis says he worked with the 49ers' wide receivers "maybe five times" in 2012 training camp, but "worked with them all training camp" in 2013.

49ers OC Greg Roman "put an emphasis" on improving Davis' routes. The Niners are short on receivers and need Davis to have a productive year. "Last year, I didn't really work with the wide receivers as much, maybe five times in training camp," said Davis. "But I've been working with them all training camp so I had a chance to really detail my routes and get an opportunity to learn what they were doing. It helped me out tremendously."
