Andersen is playing the shooter, like he should.

The better question is: what is Gardiner doing? besides ineffectively chasing Marchand, that is.

I wondered this too when the goal happened. The announcer went right to "he had to commit to make himself bigger to the puck carrier" but that is one hell of a gamble.
