Led the NCAA in yards after contact and yards between the tackle? Yeah, I get why PC/JS liked this guy over the other backs.

Pretty big reach. He would have been available in late 2nd or even 3rd round.

Kiper said so.

That obviously proves it.

You guys aren't going to believe this but guess who Pete Prisco rated as the biggest loser of the 1st round is? You are never going to be able to get it. It's so out of character for him.

Apparently RB wasn't a need for the Seahawks but WR and OL and ANYONE on the defense was a need.
Well, I am for sure glad we didn't go WR. That is probably the hardest position to hit on early in the draft other than QB, and a rookie RB has a much greater chance at an immediate impact.

John Schneider said that a GM called him asking him about whether he would trade Penny. Said that was the first time that has ever happened.

Sounds like some team had him as their target RB and did not expect anyone else to draft him so early.

Guice and Chubb both have knee issues as well, so were those guys also off your list? That doesn't leave many left at the top of the class.

I don't think this pick is necessarily ideal, but no way is it a "huge reach." I would bet anything Penny would have been picked by the end of the 2nd round had we not taken him when we did. Michel went a few picks later, another team called Schneider after the pick to make a trade offer for Penny, and I cannot see Chubb & Guice making it out of the 2nd round. Put all that together, and the Hawks didn't value Penny much different than many other teams.

I like this pick. Evidence that the run game is priority #1. This guy led the league in yards gained when 1st hit behind the LOS. Durable, can catch, elusive, tough. Perfect for our needs. Not a reach at all.
Looking forward to watching him run.

I dislike the idea that players are reached for. Even if other teams didn't like a player as much, a player is worth whatever pick the team that picks them is willing to use on them.

As for Penny specifically, I like the pick. I thought RB was gonna be their #1 target going into the draft. I didn't think there was much difference between the top backs after Barkley - so I'm not gonna get all upset that Penny was the pick instead of Michel (who I took in the mock draft). He's an instant upgrade to what we have in the backfield and has the versatility that is needed in a running back in our system.

NFL Network radio this morning was saying there were two teams late in the 1st and early 2nd that had there eyes on Penny... Patriots could've been one of them late in the 2nd...

He was definitely one guy climbing the charts the past week...

People felt we reached for Bruce Irvin too but it turned out a team 3 spots behind us was going to pick him... I think it was the Bears if my memory serves me right...

Just because these so called, "Draft experts" make their charts, mocks, etc, doesn't mean that teams draft horribly for not following their mock... Teams have many other reasons why they're drafting the way they do... Hawks wanted High character, playmakers... Penny fits that mold very well...

Some interesting numbers from 2017:

Penny had 6 games of 200+ yards. Guice + Michel + Chubb = 1

Penny had 8 games with a long of at least 50 yards. Guice + Michel + Chubb = 6

Penny topped 170 yards in all but 3 games. Chubb never got there. Michel did it once. Guice did it once.

I know the level of competition was a lot different (and Chubb & Michel competed for volume production), but those are still some insane numbers. The home run ability of Penny really stands out when looking at his game logs.

One thing missing from Penny's resume is pass catching. Even though he's described as a 3-down back, he only caught 19 passes in '17.

what about the 2nd rounder that y'all are gonna get when you trade Earl Thomas to the Cowboys? Could have got Penny there.

The problem would be if this trade doesn't go thru Seattle still doesn't have a second and Penny could possibly be off the board by the time the Hawks pick in the third.

Schneider said that he would've drafted Penny with the #18 pick... Shows that the Hawks wanted him badly...

I don't know if we get back to the '12-'15 level of rushing attack, but I feel pretty confident we will not have the fewest RB TDs in the league again in '18.
