QUARTERBACKS

Logan Thomas, 6’6” 254lb R-Jr
Mark Leal 6’0” 209lb R-So
Trey Gresh 6’1” 205lb R-So
Brian Rody 6’6” 217lb R-Fr
T.J. Shaw 6’0” 170lb R-Fr
Brenden Motley 6’3” 195lb Fr

At quarterback, the Hokies have a clear number 1 and number 2 in Logan Thomas and Mark Leal. Behind that, there will be competition for the #3 spot on the depth chart. Most likely this spot will go to either R-So Trey Gresh or athletic R-Fr Brian Rody.

Logan Thomas took a little bit of time last year to adjust to the quarterback position, but when he did, boy did he take off. A rough start led to an amazing set of games in the latter 2/3 of the season. He is a weapon, no doubt and with the loss of the Hokies starting WRs, TE, 4/5 of the OL and RBs, he will have to be THE weapon at the beginning of this season at least. This should not be too much of a problem, however as Thomas has shown himself to be a very good leader and a one man wrecking crew against defenses. He is a physical runner, and has an NFL arm. Hopefully he will have to run less this season, to protect his body, but that option is always there.

Behind Thomas, Mark Leal will be in his second season of action. He was limited last year, only throwing 13 passes. His most notable action came in clean up duty against lower level teams App State and UVA. He is more of a pocket passer than some Hokies of the past but put up huge numbers in a very complex offense against great competition in Florida and is capable of coming in if necessary. The real question with Leal is whether or not he may be our starter in 2013. Hopefully he can get some more time this season to work on his game at the collegiate level.

Behind these two, you have a competition for the third spot. Gresh will certainly be the leader going into Spring, and will see the field as our holder. He has been in the system longer and would likely be a viable emergency option. Rody on the other hand is a big pocket presence at 6’6”. It is shocking that he had no FBS offers and the Hokies are certainly happy to have him. He will be fun to watch this coming Spring for sure. T.J. Shaw is still likely a year away and likely will not get into the rotation, but will be a valuable piece on the scout team.
