Wow... this must be a really boring offseason if this is leading headlines.

I remember it coming up in the past. Rex Grossman was one who it was brought up about leading up to the draft. It's not an end all, but it is a physical trait that can be a detriment to a QB. Geno, Kaep, Bridgewater as well would fit in that group.

A guy did a study based on the QB's since 2008-2013.

He found that of the 38 "small hands" (under 9 1/4) they've averaged 4.7 TD's and 4.4 starts, and 0 pro-bowls.

25 average hand QB's 4 pro-bowls, 16 starts, 22 TD's

41 large handed QB's, 7 pro bowls 10 starts, 14 TD's.

So while it isn't a "for sure thing", it does have a pretty strong correlation relating to play over a 6 year period. There will be exceptions I am sure, but I wouldn't blame scouts for looking at that and using the info.

Niner's WR DeAndre Smelter has the NFL's largest hands at 11".

Apparently this wasn't even a stat before 2008. There is no record for guys like Manning, Brady or Roethlisberger. But it assumed they would have large hands due to their above average height.

Damn, that's big. Almost bigger than my meatstick

I would think the main advantage of bigger hands would be a better grip on the ball and therefore less fumbles in theory.

Easier to spin the ball, too, I'd imagine which should allow for better velocity. Sometimes more velocity is not desirable but in smaller QBs its probably essential which is why Brees and Wilson have big hands.

My hands are about 9 1/2" and I am only 5'9". Goff has some tiny hands.

Yup, that was the talk with Grossman big time up to the draft. But he never really did more or less than others.

I would guess others are ability to hold ball in read option plays, pump fakes, or that ball slap pump fake (like Foles does a lot, not a real pump fake, just pulling the left hand off and slapping it back).

I've never seen as much attention given to hand size as this year. There are a bunch of articles on hand size at the combine. They are saying Goff's small hands could cost him millions. He's got 9" hands which fall under the 9-1/8 to 9-1/4" NFL average. He's a QB so it's deemed more important than at other positions.

If you are curious, to measure your hand like the pros, place your hand palm down on a flat surface and stretch your fingers as far as possible. The measurement is from the outside of your thumb to the outside of your pinky finger.

My hand is 8-3/4". So much for my NFL dreams.

Wouldn't it make more sense to turn the ruler around so you could just see what the measurement is rather than having to take the measurement and then subtracting it from 12.

Who said to do it that way? All I did was put my hand next to a ruler and measure it.

This is the stupidest thing I have heard come out of the combine.
It's an alibi. Gives teams an excuse for not drafting a player.
Wonderlic test scores. Height. Weight. 40 speed. Now hand size.

Maybe the NFL should be checking Facebook and Twitter accounts regarding a player's "character" since that has more to do with a player's ability to play than anything else.

For comparison DeForest Buckner hands were 11 3/4" some experts have him as the number 1 player in this draft (both Justin Watt and Tyron Smith had 11+" hands at past combines)

Interesting note on hands: in 2010 early 2011 was at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas. Down in the foyer of one of the numerous buildings is a display of famous people's hands that have been cast in plaster.

I was surprised at how many famous men had somewhat smallish hands. In football, I remember Roger Staubach's hands. They were not large at all, and on one had a finger bent at a freakish angle, probably formerly dislocated or broken.

Troy Aikman's hands were noticeably larger, but still not huge.

You know what they say about men with small hands?
