That's a pretty long contract, kind of surprised by this. I thought he'd be on a short list for any major job this off season.

PJ Fleck’s current contract, a timeline and what do we want out of an extension?

They are just paying him 3.55mm a year with 50K increase each year. I would held out for more because schools are going to come calling and he could have gotten at least 4mm out of them.

I do admire that he got more money for his assistants instead of himself but I think you could have done both and there would never be a better time to strike.

Minnesota got a steal and honestly, they deserve it.

Locks up is a bit of a stretch. Both sides have the ability to get out of it.
Minnesota would have to pay 12.5mm to buy him out right now and that ain't happening. His buyout to go to another school is 5mm so the bigger programs could in theory still be in play but it's a large nut.

The buyouts both ways are millions of dollars. Not necessarily a huge roadblock, but still; it's a long time to have that roadblock in place. Usually these contracts are like 4-5 year deals.

My guess is U did a little longer for more security and reduce annual amount

PJ tried to spin that he took a paycut to come to MN because he originally took a shorter deal for less total dollars than he got at Western Mi even though he got an annual bump.

I think MN made right move

This looks good for both parties. PJ Fleck knows that a lot of his undefeated status has to do with the schedule and why it was done before his toughest test up until this point in the season. He might have been able to get more money but he did get a much longer than typical deal.

Minnesota Locked in a pretty good coach for the long term when they knew sharks were going to be in the water for him. Minnesota is not a destination job but he could turn it into a Michigan State or an Iowa type program where they aren’t a top tier program but not someone you overlook.

That's his "current" contract. Details of his new one aren't out as of yet.

Not a destination job? We were once one of the dominant programs in College football...just ignore everything past 1962 ;)

Pretty fair analysis.

As a gopher fan, all I want is one rose bowl in my life and the occasional 10 win season with run @ b1gw and maybe even a B1G title.

I’m right there with you for being dominant back in the 50’s and 60’s but the 70’s-00’s were rough times.

I think it was the 1968 rose bowl we didn't get to go because we had been there more recently so Indiana got to go, haven't sniffed it since (not entirely true, I think 1999 Had we beat Wi we would've gone, but we did not beat WI, my point remains)

1. I still wouldn't trust Fleck. I could still see him jumping ship immediately IF a bigger named program came offering him a job.

2.) I get why Minnesota did this now, because of the FSU rumblings, but again I still think Fleck could leave and it's a little early for Minnesota to give him such a huge extension when the hardest part of his schedule is coming up. He could go 1-3 in November. And if somehow backs into the B1G champ game, could finish the year out 1-4, and who knows what happens in the bowl game. Minnesota is far from NOT having a 9-5 season.
