could have been 9-7 if the officials didn't blow calls against seattle or green bay too.

Yeah. 9-7 with that win over the Hawks would have been good enough for a playoff spot I think. I don't know who they could have beaten in the playoffs at this point though.... maybe the Skins. But it was nice to see the offense perform close to their potential several recent games.

They could beat The Packers, tWashington team, the Vikes and maybe Seattle.

Not that it matters really. But they did finish strong. Hats off to them for not quiting.

Lions came through today. When there is zero pressure to win. Lions are all world.

They have about 20 mil in cap space as of now.. and can make 35 mil + by cutting guys like mathis, pettigrew, and tulluch. They really have no reason to mess with it unless they want to. They could just leave it as is if they wanted... but my guess is a restructure that adds more guaranteed money to the deal.

No issues with a new deal. As long as it's not pushing a bunch of money to the backend. No need to fix a bad contract with a bad contract.

The key is a new deal... not just a restructuring. Fitzgerald did a new deal last year for arizona. if the lions gave Calvin a deal for 3 years / 45 mil and guaranteed 20 mil..it would make sense for Calvin to take it as he is only has like 16 mil left guaranteed on his current deal.

my guess is the lions do a new 4 yr deal with him that pays him $15 mil per and guarantees somewhere around 20 mil. It would chop a huge number off the lions cap number.. and assure he was a lion until he retires.

What's his motivation to do this?

He's spoken publicly about altering his deal for the good of the team, but hasn't

Why now?

I'd like for something along those lines too.

Just don't have anything to hang my hat on other than wanting it.

(If CJ leaves I'm buying a Tate jersey)

His motivation is adding more guaranteed money. Its a no brainer... The same was done with Fitzgerald last year.

I doubt that Sheldon White has had full power to even sit down and negotiate the deal... That is probably a big reason it hasn't been done yet. There really is no good reason to cut him anyways regardless of cost next year. They have plenty of cap space to do what they need without cutting him.. and he is still obviously a top 10-15 WR.

So he will bet on himself not being worth 36mil over 2017,2018,2019 on the open market?

Fitz was on a winner. Different situation completely for the franchise.

The lions could give him 36 mil guaranteed over that time.. and still cut his cost.. my numbers are just an estimate... literally... the lions could give him what he would get on the open market.. AND save money. The Lions could give him a 4 year deal at 60 mil and guarantee the first 3 years and 45 mil if they wanted and still save money... I doubt that is needed... I would bet they could get it done with far less guaranteed.

Its not like Calvin Johnson is a free agent.. if the Lions want to keep him... they can as they have him under contract until 2019. After 2016 his dead money hit is only 4 mil. They could literally keep him without it really affecting their salary cap situation at all if they wanted without changing anything. I think this entire thing has been blown up by the media. The Lions don't even need to do anything. I bet they do.. but they could wait a year if they wanted. Its not like he is a complete liability or something.
