My thoughts on the Hanifin trade with Vegas - It's not terrible, it's not fantastic, it falls into the okay category for me. A 1st and a 3rd rounder (that 3rd rounder likely becoming a 2nd rounder) plus Miromanov who I know very little about seems a little light, but Frank the Tank did put out the warning signs to not expect a great return for Hanifin based on his reading of the market. The good thing in my opinion is Conroy is sticking to his plan and re-stocking the cupboard and I also hope that Vegas trades that 2025 1st rounder which turns it into a 2026 1st round pick for the Flames with my eyes set on Gavin McKenna :D

I really dont understand the motivation to the broker teams. They are basically buying a mid draft pick and more importantly, helping other teams with Cap Circumvention.

If the Cap has to be there, I would prefer a restriction that teams cannot flip a player who has already had salary retained.

He’s still a 1B rental (or on some teams a second pair guy).

Like what would Hedman get at the deadline as a rental? Or Fox? A second first round pick? An A prospect? And that’s for Norris calibre talent which by any measure Hanifin isn’t.

A first and maybe a second for Hanifin is absolutely fine return. And all the better if it’s in 25 or 26 (I believe staggering first round returns if you’re selling is superior to getting 3 firsts in the same draft, gives you way more flexibility and long term depth).

Just going to add that if you look at the work Conroy has done over the past 9 months or so (including the Toffoli trade with the Devils), I think you have to be quite pleased in totality with his performance thus far. Does Markstrom get traded before 3 pm on Friday or in the off-season?

Draft pick is a draft pick and unused cap space is wasted cap space.

Anything to facilitate more trades makes the NHL more entertaining. Despite what Vegas has done there are still two more teams with a higher cap and LTIR hit at the moment (one of which is Toronto, btw). More GM’s should be doing this.

So after the flurry of trades, it seems the biggest blockbuster so far was Byram for Mittelstadt?

Mittlestadt fills a hole for the Avs (granted seems like a bit of desperation since Johansen blows) and not sure what Byram brings to the Sabres since they already have a very good young d-core?

This was the first indication that Byram wasn't going to be in Denver for long :D

Lol.. And he probably got a concussion when the officer touched him.

my fave Casey Mittlestadt memory was him failing to do a chin up at the combine and telling everybody it was because he was "bottom heavy if you know what I mean"
