From Bill Meltzer:

Although Vincent Lecavalier has already publicly admitted that he is retiring this season, there is still a minor salary cap implication for the Flyers and Kings based on when he files for retirement. If he retires in June, both teams carry no hit. If he waits until July, he is owed a $500,000 check (the final annual installment of his signing bonus from the deal he signed with the Flyers in 2013) on July 1. For example, if he officially retires on July 2, both the Kings and Flyers would carry a $250,000 cap hit.
I gotta assume he retires in July why would he give up free money.

Umberger buyout had to happen with expansion, otherwise I would've preferred to bite the bullet and just ride out the final year of his deal.

A shame this 2nd stint with the Flyers sort of ruined his perception. Loved him from his original days with us but that time feels overshadowed now.

We appear to now have around $14 million in cap space to sign Schenn, Gudas, Manning and White, plus fill out the other 2-3 roster spots. I'm not sure how much this really leaves us to pursue a free agent, unless the cap rises or we can do something with MacDonald.

The cap ceiling for next year still seems to be very much up in the air though. It could be anywhere from $69.3 million to $72.8 million. The Pens, Hawks and Kings are all right up against the cap, so we're in a much more flexible position.

GMs get range for 2016-17 salary cap

I read somewhere that the NHLPA invoked its 5% raise for next season and now I cant find it.

Yes, that is an older article though. This one appears to state that the ceiling for next season will be $72.8 million if the players do approve the escalator clause. That gives us an extra $1.4 million from where it is right now.

So, we would be then looking at just over $15 million available to sign our RFA's and finish out the roster. There are 7 slots available with 5 RFA's and presumably a couple openings for a prospect or two to make the team.

I don't know if we have the money to bring in a guy like Okposo or even Eriksson, but we may have room for someone like Helm, Stempniak or Weise. Possibly even a Grabner or Brouwer. Either way, I think we need another veteran winger that has the speed, is 30 or younger, but can still score in order to truly compete for a Cup moving forward.

I will be very interested in seeing what Schenn ends up singing for. Looking at his stats, his past contracts and the league...$3.87 - 4.25 mil range seem about right....

I know moving Streit is a popular/unpopular topic, but cap wise it would be very helpful. It would also make room for younger players to move in.
