I'm looking to purchase a new MP3 player myself and the only reason why I plan on getting another IPOD is because it's the only player I know of that plays Itunes ACC's. Unless someone else knows about an MP3 player that plays those. (Might have been mentioned in an earlier post that I didn't see, in that case I apologize for my ignorance).

I'm going to get a Sansa Fuze (video and audio player) or Sansa Clip (only audio player) if I can't change this iPod's hard drive.

I just searched the web for whether the Clip can play ACCs. It seems that iTunes ones are ok, but custom ones take some work.

Here's some tips I found:

My sansa zip won't play and recognize aac files, - SanDisk Forums

The solution I've found to the iTunes aac problem is either: 1. Create your aac files using Nero AAC thru foobar2000

or,

2. Import your iTunes aac files into foobar2000 and use the mp4 optimizer utility.

This has worked perfectly for my 8gb zip clip and 32gb external micro sd attached. My player hasn't had any more refresh issues or playback issues on any of my iTunes encoded or purchased aac files. I'm sure that iTunes encodes are (by design) optimized to work with iPods and Apple products.

Hope this helps. Jeff S

Default Clip Zip .aac play
What worked for me. Bought a Clip Zip Plus 4 GB in March. Updated firmware to 01.01.20A (manual update). Formatted Transcend 16 GB SDHC4 to FAT32. Had a folder of 13.4 GB classical music by processing CDs with iTunes software to .aac files (128kbps, variable bit rate). Set USB mode to MSC to transfer a few files to the card. Clip Zip played .aac files only if less than about 10 minutes. The song list in the clip zip showed the file name but no action if longer than 10 minutes..

Converted the 13.4 GB folder to .mp3 files with iTunes software (about 8 hours). Configured a playlist for the whole folder using Windows Media Player and synched with the card in the Clip Zip (2 hours to load and 8 min to refresh). The music quality through the earbuds was excellent. Played through my receiver somewhat less so. The Clip Zip display showed the album structure, making selection simple.

My computer:

Dell Vostro 220
2.67 gigahertz Intel Core2 Duo
2 GB RAM
Vista Home Premium SP2

Hope this helps.

The last link says that iTunes AACs were copy protected prior to 2009, so those might not work on a Sansa. I would call Sansa or keep searching to see if there's a way to make the copy protected AACs work.

I'll probably do that too if I go the Sansa route.

I like my old iPod 120 GB.

I never buy anything off iTunes for it (like Hammer, I use amazon a lot), and don't sync it with anything.

When it burns out, I'll probably switch to something else..

Oops, my bad, I meant AAC's. But yea, opening those things look tedious as hell. I'm assuming your warranty must have ran out.

Yeah, got it in 2006, it's a 5 year warranty, so it's out.

Well, I put the cable in to the hard drive as best as I could.

The iPod won't turn on.

I don't know if it's because the battery cable isn't all the way in, or if the hard drive cable isn't all the way in.

I've done the best I can do to put them in.

* Seemed like if many others have done it before, it could be done. There are many websites and videos on this. Seemed like enough resources out there.

* I wanted to keep using this, because it has an engraving on the back.

* Seemed like a reasonably cheap thing to try, hard drive was $18, prying tools $2.

* A few years ago I built my computer, but had a friend who had done it before help me. I wanted to try this myself.

* Now that I'm seeing DRM protected iTunes files might not work on other brand players, it's another set of problems to deal with, in determining what I should get to replace this.

Just throwing an idea out there, don't know if this can be done, but can you buy a cheaper same version ipod that works and just switch the backs?

Hmm.

I looked at some prices for working used ones, they're about $54-70.

I can get a new Sansa Fuze+ for $80 with shipping.

I guess it's something to consider.

Anyways, I opened it back up, was pretty sure it was the battery cable that wasn't all the way in, not the hard drive.

But I was also checking with the end of the hard drive cable that's connected to the mother board, and now I think I made that end worse. I can't put that end back in.

Yeah, time to move on. I might have someone else look at it another day, but I don't know what else to do.

It's past it's warranty, right? Mine was past it's warranty but they replaced mine for free. Might want to take it in to a Genius Bar and ask. I figure, you've already lost your robot bits (never rely on a machine, use yourself, Mr. Robot.) they might even be able to save some stuff, but for a cost. If they can't replace it for free, it 249 for a new one, same old model. They'll probably try to talk you into buying a newer model, but whatever. Or is one too far away? You have to make an appointment, too.

I had a cracked screen and a problem charging. Fortunately they weren't related. They, of course, wouldn't replace it for the screen my wife cracked, but the power problem was enough.

Dang it, wish I'd seen your post about the Genius Bar earlier. The two closest Apple Stores don't have any more appointments for the day. The two farther ones do, but it's getting late in the day for an impromptu 30 mile trip.

Yes it's past warranty. Warranty is only 1 year for those anyways, unless you get extended warranty (which is a lot IMO).

Anyways, I found a highly rated repair service online, I'll call them tomorrow and ask. Hopefully the service shouldn't be as much as normal, as I already have the new hard drive in there, it just doesn't turn on. I don't need new parts, just need it to work.

I'm also looking into alternative players.

The Samsa Fuze+ 16GB is $80 with shipping, plus I can get a 64GB flash card for $30-40.

I might do both, try getting a new player, but also getting this one repaired.
