Rick DiPietro is still being paid by the Isles? Bought out his 15 year/$67.5 million contract in 2013 after 7 years for 16 years/$24 million at a $1.5 million cap hit until June 2029. Dude hasn't played a game in over a decade but keeps getting nice checks.

The Kings have their own one with Richards although at not nearly as huge a hit at 17 years/$10.5 million on the termed contract but that still has 8 years left on it expiring in 2032. He got paid $700,000 this year to fish in Kenora. He's stayed out of the news basically since he retired living in Ontario full time but involved in youth hockey up there.

Damn I wish I was a washed up star in the NHL - both these guys have around $46 million in career earnings.

Baseball is way worse, but the buyout stuff is definitely crazy. I follow Richards on Instagram and he just fishes and hangs with his dogs. Seems like a pretty nice life actually.

Found it. July 1st is known as "Bobby Bonilla Day" because the Mets pay Bonilla $1.19mil every July 1st from 2011-2035. But he hasn't played since 2001. Dodgers will be on something crazy too with new Shohei Otani deal. Won't even start paying him $68mil/year until 2034.

Ohtani's contract has led to state controller Malia Cohen to ask congress to step in and change the income tax law, which in his bracket is 14.4% in CA which is nothing short of absurd.

We have one of the highest income taxes in the nation and she's pushing for it saying it evades taxation illegally because when the deferred $680 million kicks in in 2034, if he leaves the state by then he won't be a CA resident and therefore they'd lose out on about $90 million in taxes. Keep in mind this needs to be changed at the federal level, not the state.

There's so few $700 million+ earners nationally - globally even - I can't see this happening unless Sloppy Joe is back in office and even then there would be Republican pushback. She's saying it's evasion but Ohtani's tax people clearly haven't broken any laws and basically out smarted her.

I hope CA doesn't get it, Cohen is a Democrat and there ain't a tax in this state a Democrat doesn't like. I have my own exit plan forming in 2030 or 2031, this state is ridiculous.
