Great discussion about the rotation, guys. Thanks for the input.

The Rocker pick shook up the draft, but I think it shakes up our discussion about the Rangers future rotation as well. Actually, I guess it shakes up the discussion about the future club in general. I think future pursuits may gravitate a little more to the offensive side than we thought would be the case 24 hours ago.

Whatever we think of them, I think the Rangers see the former Vandy duo as being 40% of our rotation of the near future.

On the other hand, we have one less very good hitting prospect in the fold than we thought we would 24 hours ago.

Saw a lot of comments online this morning along the lines of "imagine (team fans) being told they would have Rocker AND Leiter."

I wonder if the Rangers had Rocker ahead of Druw Jones on their board?

So the Rocker pickup is pretty hard to assess
It is obviously a higher risk high reward than others. We really need to have gotten this right
Heads could and should roll if wrong.

Rocker shelf life since prior damaged could be less than some. If he is not starting in 2024 something must have gone wrong

Surely not but it looks like he would have been #2. If we had a number 2 pick her might have been their target all along

probably not until the medical report was released and then hours of discussions before the decision was made.

could mean absolute jack shit, but watching live, the Rangers pick was in faster than any other team in the top 10, by a wide margin.

I am not sure why Evan is convinced that Porter will still be there.
i was wondering about Porter. i'm surprised he didn't go the 1st Day. MLB had him ranked as the #11 prospect

Porter is considered to be strongly committed to Clemson, and as he turned 19 last month, he will be a draft-eligible sophomore in 2024, which gives him more leverage in negotiations. If the Rangers wanted to, they could pop him in the fourth round, go way under slot for most of their other picks, and offer him $4 million, which would be mid-first-round money. It sounds like, however, that it would take more than that to land him, so I’m not expecting Porter to go to Texas, unless they take a flyer on him in the late teens.

I do think that the idea of Leiter and Rocker arriving around the same time adds some excitement to the mix.
It does and you hope being together elevates their game. While I am not liking what I am seeing with Leiter at the moment I think it would be an incredible thing if both turned out to be studs for the Rangers. What a bonus that would be.

assume that means they didn't want to waste time. remember they had Tom representing them at the draft and they might have been afraid he would fall asleep and not get the card in on time

I think we are going to be okay in that area. I mean people have been posting that things are getting crowded with some people blocked at certain positions. And pitching is the key.

The only non-pitchers on Adam's list were catchers.

Malcolm Moore is a prep catcher out of Sacramento. He’s a lefthanded hitter who is a bat-first guy, and we know the Rangers love their catching prospects. Ranked #66 on the BA list and #57 on the MLB Pipeline list, Moore is committed to Stanford, but is the type of player I can see the Rangers going over slot for in the fourth or fifth rounds.

Sticking with catchers, Brady Neal is a catcher out of the IMG Academy in Florida — given that is where Elijah Green played as well, the Rangers have no doubt seen a lot of Neal. Neal doesn’t turn 18 until October, and was originally part of the 2023 draft class, but reclassified — those players sometimes aren’t seen as much, which can sometimes result in them falling. Like Moore, he is a lefthanded hitter, and he gets good marks for his ability to barrel up velocity. He’s more of a well-rounded catching prospect than a bat-first guy like Moore, and he’s someone who would seem to be a potential Rangers target for above-slot money in the fourth or fifth rounds.
