I'll admit I'm not super knowledgeable about soccer, but I'm starting to make more of an effort,

I can tell when things aren't going right but I don't know the technical terms for a lot of things

So bear with me here people

A win over Portugal and it doesn't matter what we do against Germany. Hell, we can both rest our stars and settle for a tie.

Winning the group (highly unlikely) would mean playing the weaker team from Group H, not playing Belgium would be huge for potentially advancing to the Field of 8, I'd much rather face Russia & South Korea than Belgium

I just don't see Russia being that strong in the Brazilian humidity regardless of what they are ranked coming in

I wouldn't mind playing either one, emerging from the " group of death" would be a feat by itself.

Just advancing from this group (especially after losing Altidore) would be an impressive feat. Frankly, I'd be thrilled with that alone. Then take one game at a time.

I still don't think our group was the most difficult

Group D was the worst in my mind, and even further confirmed by Costa Rica's upset if Uruguay

Is it good enough to tie Portugal or do we need a win? A tie would be a good result yes? Because we are already 3 points ahead of them.

I'm in the same boat, just know I'm rooting for Ghana to play spoiler for someone else for a change

Then the US just needs to handle their biz against Portugal

Remains to be seen depending on how Portugal finishes the tournament.

A tie is a good result, but you certainly don't want to leave your fate in others hands

Getting points against Portugal is vital, and getting 3 points would be incredible.

A tie is acceptable, but not desirable. Get a win and were through to the knockout stages

A draw with Portugal would likely bring Goal Differential into the picture. Assuming Germany beats both Ghana and the US, and Portugal beats Ghana, the final group standings would be:

Germany 3-0-0 9 points
US 1-1-1 4 points
Portugal 1-1-1 4 points
Ghana 0-0-3 0 points

Goal differential would then decide whether the US or Portugal would advance as the Group Runner-Up. So IF the US ties Portugal, they would need to make sure they only lose to Germany by 1 or at most 2 goals and hope Portugal doesn't clobber Ghana. Right now the US holds a 5-goal advantage over Portugal. But a 3-goal loss to Germany and a 3-goal win by Portugal over Ghana would eliminate the US.

But a win over Portugal secures the US a birth in the final 16.

Well explained, just too lazy :usa2:

So yeah those final 10 minutes were pretty crazy. Team goes from having 3 points to 1 point then back to 3 in a matter of minutes. Looked to be the same old story for the US, but crazy clutch play by the guy in his debut.

Our guys were the walking wounded by the end of that game. We're a much better team than we showed last night. I don't know what we're going to do without Jozy.

I can't believe Mexico tied Brazil. Mexico needed our help to qualify for the World Cup.
