I was 11 when Van Halen 1 was released and was instantly hooked. Never heard anything like that. And nobody would ever think to play guitar with a power drill like on Poundcake. RIP Eddie.

not sure how anyone couldn't recognize that solo as EVH at first listen.

my favourite bit of trivia on that album is the session musicians were basically the band Toto.
so in 1982 they released Toto IV (Roseanna, Africa, etc) and Thriller.

rip eddie van halen. If you like guitar, he was like a brother. started out as a piano player, could never read music.
although eddie won numerous contests as a piano player, his piano teacher never knew he couldn't read music, until one day
he asked eddie to turn the page for him as he played, and eddie couldn't do it. eddie would just memorize what his teacher taught him.
