Wait if it's not the playoffs how did they bring him back. Doesn't this put them over the cap? Who did they send down?

The Kings only got $925,000 in cap relief when Richards was sent down, so they were already dinged for about 80% of his $5.75 million anyway.

The way the cap works, as the season moves along, the more space opens up because it is calculated daily and deducted from the cap number as salaries are paid. That's why the Kings were able to acquire Gaborik last season at the deadline even though his cap hit was $7.5 million or whatever (the BJs paid most of it already by that time, and they also retained some salary to make the deal happen. If I recall, the Kings only acquired a paltry $750,000 of his remaining $2 million hit or whatever was left).

Similar situation with Richards, the Kings cleared more space since January so his cap hit was legal and absorbed.
