Looks like the Richards era in LA is on its way to the end.

L.A. Kings place Mike Richards on waivers - Sportsnet.ca

Hope someone picks him up, I think he would be a solid addition to a team like Edmonton. Also confirms the Kings are clearing space for a move.

I don't think anyone will take on his salary but he would be a great addition. Just makes too much to be a 4C. How much will this actually save the Kings in cap space?

Not sure if anyone has the answer to this but its always mentioned the kings getting hit with a cap recapture penalty if he reires before the current contract expires. But the Flyers actually signed him to his current deal and then traded him to the kings so shouldn't they and not the kings be penalized for his possible early retirement?

No. The Kings took on the contract and all it's problems when they traded for him. I think the only thing they got rid of was the No Movement Clause which he waived to come to LA.

But then wouldn't a team that trades for him or claims him now be taking on his contract and all its problems? Or was this something post new CBA that since they didn't buy him out they are stuck with the recapture penalties instead of the flyers

Yes if a team trades for him or claims him off waivers they get his contract and all it's ramifications. One reason why he most likely won't be claimed.

Well, thanks Richards for everything. We wouldn't have one that first cup without him. 2nd one we likely would have.

We got two cups out of the trade but damn i really wish Simmonds was still here

Yup, and that is the intent of the Kings.

No different than if any other player under contract was waived/traded and claimed by another team, that acquiring team now holds the contracts and all the clauses (bonuses, etc.) and ramifications (cap recapture) that come with it.

Or was this something post new CBA that since they didn't buy him out they are stuck with the recapture penalties instead of the flyers

The Kings could be hit with a recapture penalty if he retires during this contract as a King. If he retires as a member of another organization, the years in question would be their problem.

I would make the trade for Richards in a heartbeat again. I do not think the Kings become the team they have/had been without him. I really hope he finds a way to turns it around as I like him when he is playing his game, I am not sure if I have given my opinion about him as of last season tho....

At this point it seems the Kings know no one will claim him and they wont be able to trade him. Seems DL is hoping that some time in the minors will help Richards find his game again

I know that some in this board will get angry with me. But they should have bought him out when they had the chance.

Hind-sight is always 20-20. Yes I realize you no doubt wanted him bought out when they had the opportunity after the one down year like a lot of posters here but I wasn't one ready to give up on him then. As it has turned out something between he and Darryl Sutter hasn't worked and I was wrong. It'll be interesting to see what happens after Noon tomorrow.

According to what I just read in USA Today, if Richards gets sent to Manchester, the Kings would get some Cap Relief. I'm not sure how that works, seeing that he probably has a oneway contract.

That was a good read and seeing the insight of Lombardi. He was loyal and Richards didn't pull through. You can tell by what he said about Mike batting .200 and that Temmu fell off the map for a bit but came back after changing some things. Lombardi hasn't been pleased with Richards despite his offseason program given it's not translated on the ice.

If Richards clears waivers and is assigned to Manchester how much does he get paid? If he gets recalled would he be paid at his new pay rate?
