Never should have walked Alonso. Once again, it’s giving the opponent free bases in extra innings. Alonso is hitting .220 this year.

Putting him on for free created a situation where Chapman, who has had major control problems, could not afford to walk a single guy. Next guy got a walk, and there you have it.
Can't complain about that strategy. This game was lost by the players 100%

Yeah, you absolutely can complain about that strategy. It was wrong the second he did it.

It’s the manager’s job to put his team in the best statistical chance to win. So if you’re Bochy, you should know you have a guy who has struggled mightily to throw strikes. You should also know that Alonso has not had a good year and struggles with RISP. If you put him on intentionally, you are putting your wild closer’s back against the wall. That is a statistically bad choice.

If that had been Acuna or Seager or someone like that at the plate, then yeah. Walk him. No doubt. Or, if you had a lights out closer with great control and you didn’t have to worry about walks, then fine. But putting Chapman in that situation made things worse.

Of course the buck stops with Chapman. He deserves the ultimate blame. But his manager made his job harder.

The correct call would have been to carefully pitch to Alonso if you’re scared of him. Just don’t feed him anything down the middle. See if he’ll strike himself out. See if he’ll weakly pop or foul out. See if you can get that first out without putting anyone on base. Then, if he doesn’t bite and does walk, at least you made an effort to get him out.

Huge hole they put themselves in now. One game out behind two teams when they could have been tied going into September.
Not a huge hole except they can’t handle small holes right now
Going to need more then a Marcus pep talk

Rather have LeClerc in extras and Chapman do the 8th. No extra zombie runner.

At least we jumped ahead of Houston in case a waiver guy gets down to us. You have to look on the bright side.
My first thought as well

There’a just way too much going against this team all at once. It makes wins almost impossible to come by.

Most nights the offense struggles to score more than 1-2 runs. Even against awful pitching. So that alone is going to lose them a lot of games. Then, when the offense actually does a semi-decent job and puts enough runs up on the board, the awful bullpen is there to blow it. And, in the rare case the offense AND bullpen hold it all together, Bochy is there to swoop in and make a boneheaded call.

Just way too many factors working against them.

I don’t fault Bochy for putting in LeClerc. All evidence pointed towards LeClerc and Chapman being the 1-2 combo to go with to close things out, based on recent performance. Can’t fault the manager for putting in the statistically best guys. Can blame him for making their jobs harder, though.

Le Clerc has better control. Let Chappy have the 8th. Has been used lately but real light outing last time

Devil’s Advocate Take says…

what if Bochy is some evil genius and had gotten wind that at least one of the Angels guys we wanted were going to make it through to Houston, so he ordered the walk and hit batter to put us one game behind Houston and, thus, first waiver priority?

and what if we sign that guy (Moore, Lopez, whomever) and he leads the team’s turnaround to the playoffs?

Hahaha!!

Maybe we can claim both Moore and Lopez. Of course, we would need to cut a couple of bullpen guys, but we will have to suffer through that part. Lol

That was the plan but the orders came from CY.

If Seager get 5 plate appearances Friday, he will qualify for the lead in batting average and other stats.

Frim mlbtraderumors.com:

Tomorrow will be an active day on the transaction front. It’s the last day in which teams can add players from outside the organization and still have them eligible for postseason play. Not coincidentally, non-contending clubs placed a number of impending free agents on waivers yesterday. The two-day waiver window for all those players will be resolved tomorrow at 12:00 pm CDT (though it’s possible the claim results won’t be officially announced until later in the day).

Cole Ragans for Aroldis Chapman. Will likely go down as one of the worst trades in Texas Rangers history. Another huge failure by the notorious Rangers front office.

We finally develop a legit major league starting pitcher and proceed to trade him for a washed up closer with terrible control issues. Well done.

They failed to realize they had developed a legit major league starter because they give up on their own starters too easily and long for free agents.

I wonder if tomorrow's call ups will be guys that have been here before like Speas or Anderson and Huff, or if they will go in a different direction. They may simply add Amderson and Miller.
