Wow! We throw in Smith for an 'innings eating SP' and Phils get the former #1 overall SP (Appel) and a young, talented SP (Velasquez) plus others for their BP stud. I know Giles had saves, but don't see him having much better stuff than Smith. Smith is 1 year older.

I really like most of the moves that Dipoto has made so far, but the Trumbo/Smith/Elias giveaways were and are hard to stomach.

Cubs designated RHP Yoervis Medina for assignment.

The move was made to clear a 40-man roster spot for Brendan Ryan. It's the second time Medina has been DFA'd by the organization since August. Medina had a 4.71 ERA in 21 innings between the Mariners and Cubs in 2015.

Angels claimed LHP Rob Rasmussen off waivers from the Mariners.

Rasmussen was designated for assignment earlier this month to clear a spot for Steve Cishek on the 40-man roster. The 26-year-old owns a 7.09 ERA over 30 appearances in the majors, but he'll provide some bullpen depth from the left side.
