I think they had a good plan for this year it just didn't work. When a bunch of guys including your 2 big new names have career worst years with the bats this is what you get. The pitching has been decent but a bunch of vets decided to suck this year at hitting.

Those vets are not getting any younger so where do you go from here next season? How much of this core do you keep together?

Oh I don't know what they can do now. You took a shot and it didn't work. Do you try the same thing again? This team needs a total rebuild and 3 year period of sucking, but that's not the way they do things.

Probably let Cutch walk and use that money plus Pence's on a big bat. Hope guys bounce back next year. Hope a guy like Williamson can get back in the groove. Hope a truly healthy Samardjiza can pitch a bit. Etc.

Look, we won 3 in 5 years, it's probably not our time for a while longer.

The Giants aren't going anywhere with that offense. Their season seems to be ending where I thought it would. A team middling around .500 but not good enough to compete with the good teams. There is more work to be done this offseason. Not sure what they will do but I don't see this group going anywhere.
Agreed now but injuries have really derailed this team their top three starters have all missed most or all of the season and their best starter this year Rodriguez is now down as well. Their first, second and third basemen have been gone for extended periods, their left fielder just disappeared and is worthless and their catcher has been dinged and all of the sudden has no power. They could not have expected this.
They did a good job in the off season bringing in some talent but it just didn't work.

I am grateful for that three year run. Don't see teams doing that these days. Yes, the front office won't blow it up. They want to try and compete and reload at the same time. I hope this doesn't just give us a few more seasons of sub 500 ball and delay the inevitable by a few seasons. Like when you have an old vehicle that keeps breaking down and you keep throwing money at it hoping to get a couple more good years out of it only to have the car fall apart a few months later.

I think part of the injury problem is some of the guys have a lot of mileage on them and are starting to break down. Belt can never stay healthy. IDK if he has ever made it through a full season.

And they all end up with a meh record. Competitive, sure. Each team as meh as the last. No crap team to fatten your record on. Dodgers win the division, the other 3 miss the playoffs with 83-85 wins
Good lord bitch, are you serious? It would still be interesting

McCutchen to NYY. I think that minor league infielder SF got in return is decent.

Padres have called up Luis Urias and Francisco Mejia over the past week, even if Tatis Jr hadn't been hurt he was unlikely to debut before 2019. Renfroe has taken a big step forward this season so I think he deserves to be starter in 2019 and Margot too even if he's taken a step back. Hedges has improved on offense this year and has a strong glove, but I'd rather him be the backup with Mejia starting most games. The opening day lineup should include Urias, Mejia, Renfroe, Hosmer, Myers, Margot, and maybe Tatis Jr. With that lineup and all the young pitchers they have in the minors/majors, hopefully the Padres can turn it around and contend for a postseason spot and more in a season or two.

Austin Barnes in 2017: .289/.408/.486, 137 OPS+ in 262 PA
Austin Barnes in 2018: .207/.340/.268, 69 OPS+ in 216 PA

That's a pretty high OBP for someone with an OPS barely above .600. That 2018 triple slash is just bizarre.
