Allllllright, I'm in the market for a new laptop, preference is to keep it around $700-800, and I know my Dad can get a discount via Dell...what do our resident computer geeks say in terms of getting a new PC? Mac is out of my league unfortunately, but I know I can get a good PC.

Refurbished, okay or no? It's through Apple. That's the only way I'm getting one.

I personally have not done refurbished, but apple is very good with customer support. If you have issues and take it to the apple store they take care of you.

I personally have all Mac stuff: a Mac mini, an iPhone, and an ipad, and unless you have a specific reason to go with Mac (I play around with iOS app-making; a friend loves it for his computer design stuff) you can get much better specs on a PC.

When it comes down to it, I want reliability. I use it to do school work, I take up a bit of memory space with class stuff, I'll be working on my thesis this fall, etc. I just need something that won't crap out on me, a hard drive that's reliable, and freaking battery power. SO SICK of Dell and the battery life struggles. Dell has just given me headaches.

What are you using it for?

I have never had a problem with reliability. I had a MacBook crap out on me but I think it got alcohol spilled on it when I was out of town. The people who took it apart said it was corroded as fuck.

For concerns about the hard drive, for less than 30 bucks you can get a 32GB hard drive. Unless you have a lot of video or storage intensive things, it can be a very convenient, cheap, and reliable backup option.

Flash drives

if you go PC avoid windows 8 if you can. Might help on the price as well since the "new" one have this crap Operating System
It is a good system for touch screens but not so much for laptops and desk tops.

Thanks, I was wondering about it. I've liked Windows 7 anyway.

Windows 8 isn't bad. I wouldn't spend more for it than I would for 7, but it's not the PoS Vista is/was.

I hate all the windows OS's personally. If I went not Mac I'd install Linux on it. I probably wouldn't recommend that for someone inexperienced though.

Laptops/Notebooks : Laptops, Netbooks : Computers : Micro Center

Stay away from Lenovo and Acer.

Toshiba, Asus, HP and Dell are all good. I have a Toshiba and an Asus here in the house. Although the Toshiba did get Windows wiped off it immediately in favor of Linux, so I'd expect it to run smoother. My ASUS is a monster (Gaming laptop) and I love it. And yes, stay away from Windows 8. It can be used, but it wastes so many resources trying to look pretty.

I have no problem buying refurb stuff, but I do have a higher tolerance to computer issues than most.

You can buy an apple if you don't mind paying twice as much for half the horsepower encased in shiny plastic. Although their student discounts are pretty good. Macs have good points, but the cost is... prohibitive. :)
