I agree. However, I think Lawson is still a pass rush specialist and will not be an ever down player.

I know what you mean about players panning out, and a couple more upcoming possibly we need to think about finding money for:

Preston Brown (last year)
William Jackson (has a few years)
Darqueze Dennard (last Year)
Geno Atkins (last year)
Carlos Dunlap (last year)
Carl Lawson (couple years on him)
AJ Green (this year and next)

Dennard won't command a big contract, will he? Until this last year he was widely considered a bust, was he not? If anything the Bengals should be trying to reach a 1-2 year prove-it type deal with him.

Lawson & Jackson's contract are too far ahead to be concerning themselves with them now. Too much changes in 2-3 years cap wise. Not only the team's cap differences from roster turnover, but the league cap will grow as well.

I know what you are saying. I was just mentioning guys we need to hold on to in my opinion. You are completely right on Dennard. I don't think he is going to get huge money, but on that same token, he has gotten better while Kirkpatrick continues to be t he guy in the system that keeps getting burnt and penalties.

I just personally would rather see them hold on to Dennard versus Kirkpatrick.

I would too in your position. Honestly I have never understood the hype around Kirkpatrick. He has always been soft.

In this DIV especially...you still need a solid base run DEF , but every team needs a QB hound like Lawson. He'll get enough snaps in this pass happy league.

WJ3 is already the best CB on that squad imo...Kirkpatrick had a decent season and parlayed that into a lucrative 2nd contract...he's more okay, than really good, but long CBs with some agility can get paid in this league,

Yep. I just never saw anything close in Kirkpatrick to what so many analysts did. I read some articles back a few years of people calling him the next shut-down corner. His speed & size was very favorable and he used it to his advantage against smaller receivers, but would get dominated against upper tier receivers.

I thought coming out of Bama he was going to be pretty good, but injuries early, then subpar play had me backing up on that thinking. Another over drafted CB, but he found enough to get that 2nd contract...lol

I completely agree with everything you both are saying.

So let me ask you guys something. You guys go from not being able to find enough WR help for years to having an embarrassment of riches. Who the heck is deciding on this stuff now? Same guy that couldn't get anything right except Ward, or is this a new guy?

You always have 4 WR's deep that could be 1-2's on most other teams. Washington looks like he will be pretty good too.

IDK about an "embarrassment of riches". IMO Ben has a lot to do with that success. Martavis was good, but he was a raw product and I think Ben deserves the most credit for his success. JuJu was a surprise, but I need to see sustained levels of success, and we really have no clue how Washington will pan out.

Lost amongst those embarrassment of riches are the failures of guys like Fred Gibson, Willie Reid, Limas Sweed, Sammie Coates, & Markus Wheaton. They still take plenty of shots that don't pan out. So its definitely a numbers game. But even guys like Santonio Holmes & Mike Wallace didn't pan out outside of Pittsburgh.

I think Dennard will get paid by someone after this season. There is always a team or two willing to overpay cornerback talent. Frankly, I am really disappointed in Dennard's career. I thought he was as close to a can't miss prospect as a team could pick. I didn't necessarily believe he was going to be the best at the position, but I figured he'd be a borderline pro-bowl type player for many years to come.

Lol...Same guy. Colbert has been picking the groceries for quite a while.

To piggy back off Face's comments...I think there are 3 reasons the Steelers have fared well of late at the WR position.

#1, Ben...certainly helps to have a future HOFer throwing you the ball. #2 Good position coaches. Mann (just retired) was noted to help Antonio Brown early on. #3, the WR1 works his ass off and that sets the tone for the younger guys.

Mann was a good coach, but not necessarily a good judge of talent. Assuming he had a hand in scouting the WRs that were drafted during his tenure starting in 2013: Wheaton, J-Brown, Marty B, Coates, Ayers, & Juju.

Cases can be made for Bryant & Juju, but the track record for Mann isn’t all that appealing. Granted J-Brown & Ayers were later round fliers, leaving Coates as really the only disappointment. Not to mention one of the bigger reasons they went after Ayers was to get AB off of ST returns.

But he also could have had a hand in the acquisition of Eli Rogers. So there’s somethin to be said for that.

I definitely think that AB & Ben deserve the most credit. Mann was quoted many times with saying he had the easiest job on the planet because of vet leaders like them coaching the young guys. Also a very unheralded vet leader in DHB.

Agreed, I think most of the time it's the talent and the QB...I can see Colbert/Tomlin getting insight on picks from the position coaches, but I don't think they weigh too heavily in the picks...coach Mitch got one real shot with Hargrave. Position coaches can add the nuances of the game, stuff like eye discipline, not giving away your break too early, hand combating at the LOS.
