I agree with you both. Another bat we desperately need because Howard went down and Rollins and Utley have been relatively silent. Brown and Frantz can erupt at any time but their consistency does have a touch of sporadicity. I want to see if Hamels is in his midsummer rhythm or not. And where has Cliff Lee been? Suckin' up the bucks and hiding I suppose.

You called it PC. A nice 1-run win over the Sox after a 1-run loss. Bastardo gets the win and we are back to .500, half game back of Washington, and 6.5 back of Atlanta. Keep pluggin away. We might win this division outright!!

Kinda scary....

I must say that we really should still be selling. We struggled to close against the White Socks. Yes we won the series but we had to go past 9 innings in several games.

Ben is out, Howard is out (tho he wasn't much help at all this season). The good news is that Ruff seems to be playing well at 1st base and is hitting.

How interesting would it be if we were to sell and got some younger guys and bats and we would still be in the playoff hunt. Talk about some great experience for the younger players.

Yea, I saw Revere is getting surgery on the broken ankle and Ruff is playing pretty well. The word out of Philly is there will probably be no trades as the deadline approaches. Whether that is the truth or a ruse to hide moves remains to be witnessed. I think it is stupid to do nothing as we have gained momentum and have reached .500 for the second time this year. We need younger players who can hit. Paplebon is not going anywhere as Reuben has stated he is not trading him. So we shall see how it all plays out!

We need to trade some of these veterans while they are playing good right now and hopefully can be sold high. This little streak we got going is not a sign for things to come....... Look at our Run Diff. It is horrible. We are lucky to be .500. We are not gonna win this division or get into the playoffs.

IDK Sick. If we keep losing people to injury you may have a valid point. But they may just pull this one out. We shall see after the AS break.

There are limits on new posters. We have lowered it since all the ESPN guys are coming over, but I think it is something like 5 posts now. We set it that way to stop spammers from setting up and immediately going to town.

Number1PhilliesFan. Yea that ESPN board got hijacked by a bunch of whack jobs. I think you'll be presently surprised here at SportsHoopla. It is a great place with a great owner (HammerDown) great admins and mods, and lots of passionate and coherent sports talk. I love the structure and the rules. So welcome!!

Welcome 1phil. We usually tend to just have an ongoing convo on one thread as the activity is not always up for many different threads. Anything you want to post about the Phillies, feel free to get the talk going here.

:welcome:

I agree Number one. I came over from SeeBS and when I got here it was just PC having a basic conversation with himself. So I jumped in and he and I have been bantering ever since. I am with PC. You want to start other threads, have at it and I'll find ya'!

Was the Vet, the Phillies old yard, toxic?

The sad news of Darren Daulton’s brain cancer diagnosis inspired the Philadelphia Inquirer to conduct a research project — reviewed by a University of Pennsylvania epidemiologist — into incidents of brain cancer among Phillies players and coaches who spent time in Veteran’s Stadium. The results suggest an elevated risk of brain cancer among those who plied their trade at the Vet, with Daulton, Tug McGraw, John Vukovich and Johnny Oates all being stricken.
That’s just four, but as the Inquirer’s story explains, it is a rate 3.1 times higher than in the general population. The story and the epidemiologist note that, obviously, we’re dealing with small sample sizes and the results could be a matter of chance, but it is both an interesting and potentially worrisome statistical observation.

Very interesting read BigDDude. I wonder what their findings suggest the type of contributing factors are-environmental, psychosocial, etc. I am not sure that the claim of sample size has any merit because it would be better defined if the time frame was mentioned. If they took all players who played at the Vet over the many years it was around including football players, their sample size suddenly is not miniscule anymore. Good post though.

Start with Howard. Ship his big contract out the door and bring in another D. Brown because the Phillies supposedly have more in the farm system. What the hell are they waiting for?

List all the teams that want an awful contract with an unproductive, broken down, 1st basemen. I don't hate Howard, I just hate the contract attached to him. I hated it when it was signed. It was awful and ugly and it has proven to be that every day since it was signed.

You're right Caligula. Rueben waited too long to move Howard and now, unless somebody gets a stiffy for him, we are stuck with that awful contract for its duration.
