Glad they signed both. I agree about Thompson he might be a good top 9 forward that can score if needed. It will be interesting to see those two and Megna fight for a roster spot.

I hope we give them a chance, we didn't even give Beau Bennett a chance this past season. Seems like we're very reluctant to go to the farm.

Does Jeffrey get a full look this time around; do you think he figures in for next season?

I'm with you, Doob. I would much rather see guys like Megna and Thompson who might actually have an uspside get a chance on the 4th line than retreds like Adams and Glass who have no real ceiling (floor?) at this point. It would be great to get some actual contribution from the 4th line, but I seriously doubt guys like Adams or Glass lose a roster spot to somebody like Megna or Thompson.

The Pens aren't the youngest team that's for sure... average age, they are probably near the bottom... because they do not need to rely on rookies...

But here goes some numbers for you all.

Adams - 36
Dupuis - 34
Kunitz - 33
Jokinen - 30
1/3 of the forwards are 30 or over... if my math is correct, 2/3 under 30.. I'm not an age whore, I'm a performance whore.

Martin - 32 (everyone's favorite from last year)
Orpik - 32
Scuderi - 34
Engo - 31 (counting on being the 7th)
So over half counting Engo...

If mid-to-late 30's start at 35 (the middle of the 30's) ... the Pens have Adams (and Vokoun).. I'll even throw in Kunitz and Scuds... 3 skaters... better get out the walkers for this club...

Jeffery shouldn't have a chance with this club, he doesn't fit in.. he's like Eric Christensen... top 6 or nothing... he has no physical element to be a 3rd-4th liner and Pens do not need top 6... I expect him to be traded with Nisky.

It seems everyone wants all lines to score score score... I don't care if Glass-Vitale-Adams do not score any goals this year.. play hard and physical and be momentum changers, play smart and responsible. They aren't paid to score goals.

I know I stand alone in my thinking on this board... I'm just happy mgmt. likes this team... it'll be a fun year for me to watch this squad compete for the cup... not so much for the rest of you that will focus on other things. I will be disappointed if Engelland gets more starts that Bortuzzo though, and if Bennett starts the year on the 3rd line. But I love the roster regardless. A great balance of youth, prime, and older players.

Yeah, big fan of Thompson, Menga, Gibbons, & Kuhnhackl, really hope they get a chance to play for the NHL squad this year. I don't see how anyone could object to this after looking at our projected 3rd & 4th line LOL

He has a high hockey IQ, something many Pens players do not have. No reason he couldn't be a penalty killer, and bottom six forward. A Jokinen - Sutter - Jeffery line is the antithesis of DB's style, but is par for the course for a team like Detroit.

It's the type of line that fans don't see cause they don't score many goals, and aren't overtly physical. But they would effective if allowed to play their style.

I definitely agree with this

DJ has never been given an extended opportunity in the lineup. He's always been a bit player and a usual healthy scratch.

Another example of Bylsma mismanaging the young talent?

There really wasn't a place for players like Dustin Jeffrey, Joe Vitale, or Beau Bennett unless we had multiple injuries to the main guys. I think those players will get a lot more opportunities next season. I really don't see what other choice we have but to let them play on a regular basis.

Agreed. they don't really have a choice but to give some of these forwards a long hard look.
In other news pens sign Matt D'Agostini. Finally someone who isn't 34

12 forwards signed to one way deals, and DJ probably the 13th. Not much room for any AHLer to crack the opening night roster unless, as part of the defenseman trade (ie Nisky) a forward is part of the package... I am assuming D'Agostini will handle the 4th line left wing/ 13th forward role... making Tanner Glass expendable. Saving a precious 550K. DJ is still a question mark for me... I see it shaping up like this on opening night

kunni-sid-dupper
neal-geno-bennett
?? - sutter-jokinen
d'A - vitale - adams
(I guess DJ as 13th)

scuds-letang
orpik-martin
bort-despres
(engo as 7th)

One open roster spot for quite a few guys to battle it out for opening night.., plenty of guys will get looks throughout the season due to injury...

Correction D'Agostini signed a two way deal.. I have to stop relying on capgeek so quickly...

Bortuzzo filed for arbitration.

Yeah I was wondering if that was a one way deal also.

If that was the case then Jeffrey was officially gone. Anyway I agree Jeffrey is not a 4th line grinder but should be a top 9 forward and with all the AHL players and now the signing of D'Agostini he could become redundant very fast.

Yeah he really isn't but I still don't see the harm in seeing him in the lineup for 20-30 games somewhere. You could always find a grinder at the deadline for little cost.

I couldn't agree more with both posts. Replacing Cooke will be difficult but a Jokinen - Sutter - Jeffrey line is intriguing and definitely seems more than capable on paper.

I was surprised Bylsma didn't play Jeffrey in the Finals, given his numbers against the Bruins. Seems like Bylsma would rather hold players like Jeffrey and Despres accountable rather than addressing the 'stars' of the team.

Oh yeah i would love to see Jeffrey get a real shot and not just 6 minutes a game with the likes of Vitale/Glass and/or Adams.

If the 3rd line is Jeffrey-Sutter-Jokinen it will not be that bad.

On the top of Penguin draft picks that Shero ever picked (not including Jordan Staal) none of them have played 100 games in the NHL. Jeffrey has the most at 90, Despres 51 and Bennett 26.

Yeah the last 3 drafts might be too early but the '06 through '10 not much development into NHL players. Also the '08 draft was a wash due to the late picks only and none of their 2nd round picks except 1 game by Sneep ever played in the NHL.
