I'm debating...I have Windows 7 still and never wanted Windows 8. I'd like to try it but am worried about bugs and such. Anyone?

You go first and tell us how it goes.
Personally I never want to be first with new software.
I'l just try to be first in the beer / chow line.

Windows 8 is really good, with the touch screen and user friendly interface. Can only imagine that 10 would be better.

If you like touch screens I can see that, but Windows 8 is inferiour to Windows 7 in every way to me (I don't like touch screens; I use a mouse).

Yep, it's the touch screen that does it mostly. I miss it on computers that don't have it. If you learn your way around some of the quirks that were more accesible in pre-8 versions, it does just about anything you need faster. Combo of mouse, touch and ctrl shortcuts and you can work very fast.

Everyone will get 10 at some point. It's the last OS. No, really.

I wouldn't get 10 right away. Let it sit there reminding you for a week or so and watch the news. Every MS release is fraught with issues. Let others find them.

You will/should update at some point though. It's entirely free to anyone with a valid 7 or 8 license on their current machine. The reason is they will prematurely close support for both 7 and 8 so they can integrate everyone into their ongoing 10 unit. There are other reasons as well, but MS wants 7 and 8 to go away before their listed end of life.

From this point forward MS will simply add new features to this new OS. There will be no more major launches of new OS, just the updates that bring this one to new functionality.

So your free upgrade really does last as long as your current computer lasts. The license does not transfer to other machines.

I was not excited for Windows 8, but my old Windows 7 laptop took a shit on me about a year ago and I required a laptop to get any work done. Got 8.1 and I really don't see too many differences if you just go straight to the desktop. A few programs aren't compatible but overall 8.1 is really solid.

That said I won't be getting 10 unless I get around to assembling a desktop PC at some point.

That's what I meant about quirks. It's pretty simple though, use the Windows key to toggle between touchscreen view and traditional desktop view, where you have the little files folder icon on the top or bottom bar depending how you configure it.

Have you used Windows 8? It took me about a half hour on first use to mess around with it and get it set up similar to previous versions... 5 steps to get to my files my ass...

10 is kind of a cross between 7 and 8. You get your start button back with a lot of what was on 7's, but you also have live tiles that let you use the parts of the new 8 interface you might have liked. We are told you will be able to shrink and/or turn off the tiles if you really don't want them, although that wasn't really fully rolled out in the beta.

So if you are avoiding 10 because of how much you first didn't care for 8, don't use that as a reason. They listened to the feedback and gave people back the things they simply were not willing to get go of from 7.

And it doesn't use any more resources than either 7 or 8 so don't worry about it running on older hardware if you already have either of those on it. It should handle your gear just fine.

I'll probably wait until the end of August to do it.

I am set to go, but I will likely wait a week or two before doing the actual upgrade.
