Worthy of its own thread since there are so many good answers to this question:

  • QB2... Dobbs vs Rudolph. Who ya got?
  • RB depth... Seems like they are set with Conner, Samuels & Snell. But I heard Webb is making a name for himself. Nix could be a candidate for the axe now that they are trying Sutton Smith in that FB role.
  • WRs... Washington vs Crief for WR2 opposite Juju. Rogers is on the bubble. Spencer is a hot name right now. Johnson turning heads as predicted. We’ll have to wait & see when the pads come on.
  • TE... Grimble vs Gentry. Might see another name added to this group.
  • O-line... Feiler vs Chuks for RT. Depth spot available. Hawkins, Gray, & Banner.
  • D-line... McCullers vs Buggs is shaping up to be a good battle.
  • OLB... Chick & Ola battling for primary backup is going to be an exciting one to watch. Also curious to see how Sutton Smith works into this group.
  • ILB... nothing seems concrete other than we know Bush is going to be used a lot. Williams & Barron could compliment each other or maybe Barron slides into the big dime package. We shall see. If Bush nails down the green dot duties early then V-Will could definitely become a 2-down backer. Also curious about Gilbert & how he will factor in.
  • CB... Artie Burns vs himself. Sutton & Allen on the bubble.
  • S... Lots of UDFA names in the mix this year.
  • Specialists... Switz, Johnson & Rogers as return guys. Boz & Wright. Berry & Berryman.
So what say you? What training camp battles are you most looking forward to?

Good stuff.

QB...good battle, both players should be pretty familiar with the playbook this time around. If Rudolph is indeed the better pro prospect, it should surface this yr.

RB...set, Nix will be the FB.

WR...Crief should get the WR2 job, but I expect Washington to factor this season...I'm hearing a lot about Spencer as well.

TE...look for PIT to bring in another body...someone that could potentially get TE2 snaps...this is probably not the guy, failed his physical so the deal with NE was nixed, I'm not feeling Grimble is safe...2019 Offseason Questions: Will Steelers Put In Waiver Claim For TE Michael Roberts? - Steelers Depot

OL...agreed...apparently Hawkins seeing some work at G.

DL...yep...Buggs reportedly has NT and DE capabilities

OLB...We know both TJ and Dupree will get the bulk of the snaps, but if Adeniyi is still impressing this season, I think he will get more snaps than Chick.

ILB...a lot to absorb here. If the objective is to improve pass coverage at the position, at least on paper, they may finally have the right personnel to make it happen....excited to see this grouping.

CB...Hard for me to imagine Burns making this squad, but he's more talented than Sutton and Allen for sure.

S...I'm more interested in a seeing what they do with Davis long term....the room is light on FS skillsets. I'm seeing less need for the 3 S sub pkg with Barron able to play the hybrid role....maybe not as much opportunity for Marcus Allen.

ST...I expect Boz to turn it around and be the kicker for this season...actually curious to see how the Battle of the Berrys goes.

This is going to be an interesting situation for QB2...they have kept 3 QBs for quite some time so I don't think that will change, but seeing the growth of these two players in their 2nd and 3rd yr in the league should be telling.

Rudolph is reportedly miles ahead in the playbook... But we'll see how things shake out when the pads come on and cages get rattled.

Just going off the early vibe I'm getting...RB may now be the deepest position on the team with the addition of this young man...a lot to learn obviously, but he appears to be picking up pass pro well, and I'm hearing his hands are pretty good too.

There was a lot of talk here in ATL getting him to pair with Freeman. They opted to dbl down on OL in the 1st and gave up their 2nd/3rd rd picks so they ended up with the big RB from PITT, Qadree Ollison in the 5th instead.

I'm very interested to see how Samuels plays in camp & preseason. He's kinda being overlooked with Snell in the mix, and from what I've heard he's gone through quite the transformation. Dropped weight and been doing speed training all offseason in hopes of becoming a better pure runner.

RBs are probably gonna be in the 350-450 touch range in terms of handoffs...RB1 maybe 250 of those. The remaining we'll have to see how they distribute them, but I see Samuels getting some TE or HB snaps as well.

Me and too his oc didn’t run him
I’m college, that may change but this expectation that he’s now a runner is baffling

I'm not sure if the Steelers ever saw him, or see him now as a pure RB, but when pressed into FT RB duty he show himself well.

I still like his tweener, multi-skillset and hope Randy and Ben can get him into some positions to improve on his numbers from LY. Would like to see his pass targets up around 50, he might not get a whole more rush attempts than LY if Snell Jr shows he's ready early.

No he wasn’t, doesn’t mean he can’t get better than he was. And judging by his previous performances, we can expect great things if he has gotten better.

I suppose. But like a duke Johnson’s convo why change a great thing, pass receiving back.

As a secondary runner that’s why they brought in snell.

Could be wrong. Maybe they use him like kamara I dunno

I think both options are on the table. Originally I think drafting Snell was more about providing insurance for the group if Conner continues to battle nagging injuries. And as AtL has alluded to, I don’t think Samuels was really ever planned to be a pure RB, but he showed he can easily handle the role. Samuels could very well transition back into some sort of hybrid role.

Exactly...hybrid.

Trying to iso him on LBs should be part of his role. Or in a empty set, if a team goes dime on say 3rd and 2, they can motion him back into the backfield and pound it.

I'm almost expecting a 50/50 rush/target ratio with a little margin for more weight on one or the other.

So what say you? What training camp battles are you most looking forward to?

QB2 - I have Mason winning out.
RB - I wouldn’t be too heartbroken with Nix getting the axe. Samuels would be a good FB as well. (My favorite battle)
WRs - I’d love to see Washington at the 2, Crief at the 3 and Johnson at the 4.
TE - I’m not an X fan. Haven’t been for his tenure. Gentry isn’t a hit for me either so this is a toss up for me.
OL - I love Chuks and he has the potential to grow.
DL - Buggs for me.
CB - Burns better set the field on fire because I’m not sure he’s gonna get another year if he doesn’t improve and improve big time. I’d rather Sutton over Burns right now.

Love Switzer as the return man and would like to see him utilized in some packages at slot receiver or End around type guy too. Boz needs to go, in my opinion. Last year was a nightmare on and off the field and he was a huge source of the stress on field.

QB...everyone feels like Mason is the better pro prospect even if he's not the heir apparent. I'm willing to let this play out for QB2, but I think they will keep 3 QBs.

RB...if Samuels is slimming down trying to get faster, Idt FB will be a position for him...I think they go 3 deep at RB and keep Nix unless they really like Sutton Smith as a FB.

TE...agree 100%. X is a talented guy that can be a legit TE2, but not many people have much confidence in him. Will not be surprised if he's released actually.

DL...I haven't really heard much but there is some chatter out there that Buggs and can play DT and DE...if so, McCullers is gone.

CB...Burns will either start, be traded, or be released. I don't see how they can pay him $3mil to be a backup.
