I just heard it on WFAN during the flash.

Gotta say, I'm pretty surprised since this team sucks anyway.

I'm kinda surprised also. The only way that I see a reason for this is if some team contacted Lou and said they wanted to pick him up off waivers.

His cap hit/salary still counts in the AHL so there is no reason to demote him.

You sure about that? I thought that was the reason Drury was sent to the AHL?

If you sign a deal after 35, you count until the deal is done no matter where you are. (I think that's what it is anyway.) So Drury likely signed his deal before the age of 35.

I just don't know who fills that spot. It is not like we have tons of talent banging down the doors of the Prudential Center.

If he would retire, does it still count 100% of salary against the cap?

No one will fill the spot unless Rolston is claimed. As everyone knows, his cap hit counts no matter where he is, so the Devils can't afford to pay even a minimum player their salary That would cost them another 500K in cap space.

Lou obviously wants to see if anyone will take Rolston, and if not Lou says he stays with the team. This is a move I think has a financial backing too, since we signed Kovalchuk this off season, attendance has plummeted so the team has less operating revenue. There down 1,000 tickets sold per game ATM. The devils average ticket price is $48.05 so if you x that 1000 x 41 home games, you get $2M less ticket sales. Assuming $10 for good on those 41000 less tickets and you get .5M. Another .5M in lost parking revenue.

That's $3M in lost revenue from that, then factor in the Devils salary in real $ is actually closer to $65M even though injuries have saved him versus last year at $58. So the Devils are spending at least $7M real dollars in 10-11 compared to last year and are definitely making less money..

How about early retirement - does it 100% count against the cap?

the one thing i know about lou is you never know with lou.I think mc brings up some very good points but i also think there could be more behind it.if you think about it by waiving rolston lou is making a statement to the team that he doesnt care who you are or what you get paid your not safe.by waiving rolston hes also putting himself in a better position at the same time.either A no one wants to touch his salary and he accomplishes that without losing a player.Or B someone picks him up and they are able to move some of his salary and bypass the ntc.either way its almost win win.whereas if he tried to make the same point by waiving say A langenbrunner, clarkson or white we would be just about guaranteed another team would pick them up and be left with nothing in return.all in all i think it was a smart gamble.could also be a prelude or last ditch effort to get jmac going.I wouldnt be surprised to see him gone if this move doesnt spark the team.

I agree with everything you guys are saying.

To answer your questions, DevFan, to my knowledge, it counts even if he retires. And I would highly doubt Marty is next since he is no worse than any other goalie we have. His cap number is also not the worst on the team, so there are quite a few guys that would go before him.

I do think that Lou is not solely responsible for a lot of the garbage that is going on right now. Ownership has definitely been very vocal this past off season.

if you retire your cap hit still counts.

its a stupid move unless there is a team that is willing to pick him up....there are other players that def deserve to be waived and have their cap hits come off the books! so if this is to "send a msg" i think they could've picked a better player.

besides according to tilo rolston was one of those players who's injury really hurt this team? it sucks to see him go just when he got back :(

I dont recall saying that, but it does sound like something I would say. And yes, if Rolston was doing better so would the team as a whole. Thanks for personally calling me out in the thread though.

Wouldn't sweat it tilo not contributing due to injury is much better than being a healthy scratch due to poor effort

I thought part of reason for his signing was to get fans in the stands.
Yes our current record does not help...but then isn't he that superstar that people would want to come out and see regardless...oh no wait that is Crosby and OV.:L

It looks like this deal has failed in more than one area.

1. More creativity...NOT
2. Offensive pressence and scoring....NOT
3. Power Play dominance...NOT
4. Attract more people to fill the seats/generate revenue...NOT

Great!
