I will fact check myself - but he was gone for our Super Bowl - don't know why the last few days I have been putting our Super Bowl in the 2012 season (did the same thing in a conversation with a friend yesterday).

Statistically our D was good, but under bradley we had bad 3rd down D and rarely got pressure on the QB. It changed when he left.

It's a lot easier to draw up pressures when you have 3 or 4 pass rushers as opposed to 1.

People seem to have poor memory, maybe its the game day drinking.

Bradley didnt blitz, he rushed 4 and that was basically it. 3rd down D was terrible, im sure the stats will show it wasnt that bad but we had trouble getting off the field on 3rd and long

That's by design of Carrolls defense. He feels that his team's strength is in coverage, so why weaken that strength? And Quinn didn't blitz any more than Bradley, according to PFF, 12, 13 and 14 defenses all only blitzed around on 20% of defensive snaps, ranking them around 26yh in the NFL. Now, they did become more effective when they blitzed under Quinn, but that could very well be because defenses are already more concerned about a slew of pass rushers, allowing blitzers to be more effective than if you have one, or no pass rushers. Just ask Packers, Steelers or Cards fans (teams who historically blitz a lot), it only works if you have legit pass rushers to draw attention.

According to profootball reference, in 2012 we gave up 9.7 yards on 3rd and 10+. 2013 we gave up 4.5. Thats a huge difference.

He was still a huge part of putting that SB D together though. Just look at all the players still on it now from when he last coached here in 2012.

If we kept Bradley in 2013 we don't have that special year, he would a done sometimes strategically boneheaded to lose it for us... I would put 1,000 on that... Quinn was a blessing at the time..

Again - adding a bunch of pass rushers helps you on 3rd down.

Yes, but was that a change in defensive design...or talent.

2012 Seahawks DL:

Cris Clemons (868)
Red Bryant (625)
Brandon Mebane (623)
Alan Branch (560)
Bruce Irvin (434)
James Jones (318)
Clinton McDonald (287)
Greg Scruggs (199)
Jaye Howard (22)
Hebron Fangupo (6)

2013 Seahawks DL:

Michael Bennett (600)
Cris Clemons (570)
Tony McDaniel (528)
Brandon Mebane (531)
Cliff Avril (551)
Clinton McDonald (530)
Red Bryant (481)
O'Brien Schofield (144)
Jordan Hill (63)
D'Anthony Smith (46)
Benson Mayowa (24)
Michael Brooks (15)

So, not only did Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril and O'Brien Schofield get added for pass rush, but the team's depth was so insane that year, as no Dlineman played even 60% of the defensive snaps.

Football is one sport where coaching makes a huge difference. Ya personel changed, but we also brought in a great DL coach in quinn.

Im amazed at the lengths people will go here to defend anyone and everyone.

It amazes me the lengths some people will go to minimize the efforts of those who have been successful here.

I'm amazed how people gloss over facts like how pass rushers can immensely help a defense. Or how a HCs philosophy rules all.

So, when it's Bradley/Quinn/Richard football is the one sport where coaching makes a huge difference and the success of the defense is because the DC coached the talent up.

But, when it's Bevell our offense is only successful because Wilson has risen above the horrible coaching and made our offense successful.

So which is it? Was our defense #1 and offense #4 last because the coaches made a huge difference, or was our our defense #1 and offense #4 because the coaches suck and the players did it all on their own?

It's kinda' like art or ****, you know it when you see/feel it.

Everything the defense does and has done runs through Pete Carroll ultimately. When Bradley was here, it was Pete Carroll's defense that he was running. Same with Quinn and Richard. Each coordinator has tweaked things here and there, but it's still Carroll's defense. So when you get right down to it, the biggest difference between the Seahawks having one of the best defenses in the league under Bradley and them having one of the best defenses ever under Quinn is personnel. If Quinn had been given exactly the same personnel to work with as Bradley had to work with and we saw the same type of jump in quality, it'd be much easier to blame Bradley for not getting that defense to play to its fullest potential and much easier to praise Quinn for what happened on his watch. The reality is, Quinn was given more to work with than Bradley was. That isn't to say that Quinn doesn't deserve any credit for the improvement from '12-'13, but I do think that Bradley deserves less of the blame for what happened in 2012 than he's gotten since then.

Now I'm pissed off that the Hawks went out and wasted a bunch of cap space on free agent pass rushers in 2013, after they had already fixed the problem by moving from Bradley to Quinn.

It's a good thing we sent Dan Quinn briefly down to Florida to discover all those untold secrets of coaching a defense. Adding Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett that off-season is just a footnote -- can't believe those 2 are even still around!

And, of course, we got lucky twice in a row with Richard I guess.
