He did not start playing until his 20s.

Biography[edit]
Peete was born in Detroit, Michigan. He played on the 1983 and 1985 U.S. Ryder Cup teams. He won the Vardon Trophy for lowest scoring average in 1984. He was in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking for several weeks when they debuted in 1986.[1]

Peete did not begin playing golf until he was in his 20s, but immediately excelled at a game most pros learn as young children. He learned the game while peddling goods to migrant workers in Rochester, New York, playing on the public course at Genesee Valley Park. Growing up poor, Peete suffered a badly broken arm that was never properly set.[2] He was the leader in driving accuracy on the PGA Tour for 10 straight years, 1981–90. Peete was inducted into the African American Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.[3]

Peete died after a long battle with lung cancer, in Atlanta, Georgia on April 29, 2015.[4] He was 71.

On a side note about Peete and his bent left arm. It was a permanently bent arm as a result of a childhood accident when he broke his arm.

It is not exactly recommendable to imitate that.

Does make me admire the guy's game that much more. I mean it would be amazing if someone who picked up the game in their twenties to ever get to a single digit handicap. That, would be impressive as hell. Even if it it was done from the "white tees."

This guy, I mean come on. Won 14 times? The TPC? Top 10 at one point on the PGA tour?

You have to be kidding. He did it.

I got a chance to meet him with several other Champions tour players at the old Liberty Mutal event we were volunteers.

Speaking of starting golf late...my father n law started playing in his 40...career low 66 in a tournament...was the amateur course record for over a decade @ Carambola, might still be standing.

Anyway...Mr Pete...Short but straight.

RIP
