The J man is getting a little shaky. his last two saves yielded runs. You don't get a lot of save opportunities
with a two run lead. (with the Phillies). He needs to focus better.

Ruf is now 8-72 as a pinch hitter. Just do the guy a favor and release him so he can play first base/DH for the Rays or something and get regular playing time.
Thanks to your stats on Ruf I was able to calculate his batting Average minus pinch hit at bats.
Believe it or nt his batting average is .272 in games he did not pinch hit. And that is including all his at bats
since he joined the Phillies1

Yeah, the only thing I wonder about if he went to some AL team and became a first baseman/DH is if he is so bad at pinch hitting does that mean he would have a problem being a DH? I'm guessing he would be fine as long as he got his ABs every day

You're right. Pinch hitting doesn't or shouldn't count. He's a major leaguer and shouldn't have to do that. Poor Ruf. I almost feel as bad for him as I do for Sam Bradford.

In 5 yrs of ML action, Ruf has struck out at a 31% rate (221 times, 708 ABs) and is .239/.315 overall. It really is the K rate that keeps Ruf on the bench as someone stated earlier in another thread. But he is consistent - 17 Ks in 54 ABs this year for 31%. lol.

For perspective, Pat the Bat K'd at a 28% rate in 12 years - but he also hit 300 HRs. Wow. I guess we'll never know if more playing time would have reduced Ruf's Ks.

I never said it shouldn't count. He is not a good pinch hitter. He will never get a fair chance to play on a regular
basis with the Phillies. He would need to face all types of pitching to prove himself and that will
never happen.

I like the Salisbury article on calling up Tommy Joseph. The 1b platoon is a huge hole for the Phillies. Howard/Ruf are hitting .177/.164 and striking out at 37%/32% (holy shit, 37%?). This year at LV Joseph is .368/.391, striking out only 10% with 6 HR and 7 doubles in 25 games. In 7 injury riddled seasons in the minors Joseph is .253/.305/.421 and struck out 21%, not too shabby for a power guy. He also may not be a defensive liability vs Ruf.

The book on Joseph says that his defense was poor as a catcher. The same has been said about his defense at 1st base. But they think he will improve with experience. Some believe that Josephs turn around at the plate is due to the fact that he lost 25 pounds while recovering from injuries. He has a quicker bat speed than before and is also
hitting to all fields. He has been a pull hitter in the past and his power is still mostly to left field. I would think that they will keep their eye on him to see if he keeps producing at a high level.

I can't believe how bad we were fleeced on this Hamels deal. Eickhoff is done. It's only a matter of time before Velasquez is on the DL. It's like the Astros were some shady used car dealership that put sawdust in the transmission of some old car so it will run ok for a month, then stop working after the 30 day warranty is up.
