Spring training is beginning, with pitchers and catchers reporting today and workouts beginning tomorrow. It appears that we're ready to go!

The contest is officially open! Feel free to post your predictions in this thread. I will endeavor to acknowledge all predictions and to update the list of predictions frequently until the regular season begins. Good luck to all participants!

Here are the final contest rules:

1. Poster must predict an exact won-lost record for the Pirates' full regular season.

2. The first poster to predict a specific won-lost record will have "squatter's rights" to that prediction. That is, later predictions of the same W-L record will not be accepted.

3. Poster may change his/her prediction until the regular season begins, as long as the change does not violate rule 2. A prediction vacated by such change becomes available to other posters.

4. The contest will close to new entries when the regular season begins.

5. Predictions should be posted in this thread.

6. If the Pirates do not play 162 games (e.g., due to un-made-up rain-outs) the contest will revert to games won as predicted by each participant.

7. I reserve the right to reject any prediction for any reason.

83-79.
we get over the hump and just win baby win,

i think this is the year some of our maybes really have some above average years.
not sure who they will be, tabata, snider, martin, mcdonald, liriano, presley.
if we can hold steady with
cutch - a little drop off would be acceptable even, but more consistency all 6 months
pedro - consistency
jone - intensity everyday
walker - healthy all year (could you imagine if he was still catching how much he would miss
burnett - what he gave us last year
wandy - his average year for the last 4

and an exciting pen of fighters for jobs and outs.

i am locking in.

I have pinned the thread to the top of the page. It will remain there until it no longer makes sense for it to be there. :thumb:

Also, my prediction is 83-79, because I use this prediction almost every year, and goshdarnit, it's going to be right eventually!

EDIT: Darn it, sych! Just seconds before me.

Fine, I'll be more optimistic. 84-78. :D

mags, who would have thunk, the first 2 predictions the same at the same time. might as well cancel the pool as this is way beyond coincidental. it must be the final record.

82-80

After the first two predicitions, 82-80 seems like a natural choice. I like the pitching depth and I like Marte to bust out this season. Also not having Barajas in the lineup is HUGE. I like Liriano to do much better in the NL. Let's go Bucs!

The streak ends & the Bucs get a Wild Card Playoff Spot!

I like the looks of & the depth of this team to bust out!

hey darkstone, thanks for changing and sorry for the vulcan mind meld we shared momentarily.
i was on the fence about 83 or 84. lets coop them together and we have 2 chances to win and can split the prize. like buying 2 lottery tickets together to double our strength (and on the down side) or halve the pain.

I just can't homer this one... It's been soooo long and the last 2 years have strung me out.

Going with 77-85

I will go with 79-83. Grilli's arm blows out the second half of the year and we lose alot of close games.

Not liking the make up of this roster at all. I am also fearful for Cutch, read something a while back that said that players under 26 that post b2b 5 WAR season have a lot of trouble there-after. I would feel better if we would have gone with internal options in the rotation as well. All in all I just think this will be the season that costs the front office their jobs, possibly even before the AS game.

71-91.

I think we will be disappointed most of the year but that cole will lead us in a late charge.

wow they are going fast. Being a bit more pessimistic I will go with 76-86 and reserve the right to change it based on what I see in Spring Training.

Acknowledging element1286 and TheBurgh88

I've added your predictions to the list, which now includes 13 participants:

87-75 Burgh Sports Rule
85-77 element1286
84-78 Darkstone42
83-79 sychmd
82-80 stillmatic32

77-85 SFNL
76-86 TheBurgh88
75-87 thedddd
73-89 magnumo
71-91 thecrow124

Interestingly, there is only one prediction available between element's 85-77 and thedddd's 75-87..... and only four available between our most optimistic prediction (87-75 by Burgh Sports Rule) and our most pessimistic (71-91 by thecrow124). Wonder how quickly someone will jump on 80-82?

I would rather scrape my balls over broken glass than predict 80-82. Even if I honestly thought that would win.
