The Astros have scratched Bud Norris from his start tonight vs the Orioles.

Will he be heading over to the home team clubhouse?

Probably not. Rumors suggest he will heading elsewhere.

Sounds like they're still trying to complete a deal as of late tonight. Maybe Houston will take Hammel with Hader and Avery..or something like that. I wouldn't be surprised if it's for Ed. Rodriguez straight up. If they move Hammel it will free up some salary space however.

I don't want Norris. Definitely not for Eduardo Rodriguez.

What do we get from Norris? Maybe a dozen starts?

And from a pitcher who has a 6.38 ERA in 4 starts in July and a .306/.365/.494/.860 line for the season vs lefthanded hitters.

Hammel has a comparable line vs lefthanded hitters and a better ERA (5.52) in his 4 July starts. I just don't see much of an upgrade with Norris.

BTW - Trading Hammel (if possible) would not get us much salary savings because we would have to pay most of his salary for the other team to take him.

Don't forget though Norris is under contract until 2016 so we'd have him awhile.

Which for simple value purposes, is better than holding on to or paying Hammel. We could always look to trade Norris again at next years deadline.

So we would have 2 more arbitration years with a #5 starter who got $3M in his first year of arbitration. Even more reason not to trade Eduardo Rodriguez for him.

BTW - Hammel was a Super Two who got $1.9M in his first year, and $3M in his second year. Looks like the same path Norris is on. I still don't see any reason to acquire Norris, who looks just like Hammel.

What are we going to do with Hammel where we are not stuck with him or paying him? No other team wants Hammel. We're stuck with him.

Norris will probably be getting paid twice what he is this year. He already looks like another Hammel. Nobody wants Hammel this year. Why would any team want Norris next year? There doesn't appear to be much interest in Norris this year, while he is less expensive.

Still don't see any reason to trade for Norris.

Norris's career stats suggest that he could be a slight upgrade over Hammel. Still, the difference probably isn't large enough for the trade to be worth it. Personally, I would rather do this:

* DFA Hammel (If he refuses minor league assignment and chooses to leave, so be it-- why lose both money and games when the salary is a sunk cost?)

* Use a "relay team" of Britton and Gausman as the #5 starter (they could each go for 3-4 innings every five games). If needed, the #5 spot could also be skipped whenever the schedule allows it.

Granted, this does mean having to live with a short bench-- but it's only for one month before the rosters expand in September.

According to Ken Rosenthal, it's making progress.

Norris will help, and it allows them not to have to rely on Hammel.
