Why aren't the players named. They're just as guilty for taking the money.
Louisville apparently paid 100k for recruit Brian Bowen. Being an Arizona fan I'm almost 100% certain about the recruit involved in our situation. The puzzle pieces are fairly easy to put together from the snippets of information being released.

I wonder more what this will do to the NCAA once its all said and done. Not that it was credible at all before but now....
Might be the death sentence.

As far as the feds being involved in football, well, after Penn State, Miami, and Baylor they SHOULD be/have been involved iyam.

Still trying to figure out how and why all of this is illegal.
Against NCAA rules, sure, but illegal.

Someone explain this.

Conspiracy, Bribery, Fraud

Section 1(1) of the Criminal Law Act 1977 provides:

"...if a person agrees with any other person or persons that a course of conduct shall be pursued which, if the agreement is carried out in accordance with their intentions, either -
(a) will necessarily amount to or involve the commission of any offence or offences by one or more of the parties to the agreement, or
(b) would do so but for the existence of facts which render the commission of the offence or any of the offences impossible, [added by S.5 Criminal Attempts Act 1981]
he is guilty of conspiracy to commit the offence or offences in question."
Section 1A (inserted by the Criminal Justice (Terrorism and Conspiracy) Act 1998, s5) bans conspiracies part of which occurred in England and Wales to commit an act or the happening of some other event outside the United Kingdom which constitutes an offence under the law in force in that country or territory. Many conditions apply including that prosecutions need consent from the Attorney General.

The General Federal Bribery Statute punishes the offence of bribery in the U.S[iii]. According to 18 USCS prec § 201(b), whoever directly or indirectly, corruptly gives, offers or promises anything of value to any public official with intent to influence that person’s official act will be fined for the offence of bribery. The punishment prescribed by the statue is a fine of an amount not more than three times the monetary equivalent of the thing of value, or imprisonment for not more than fifteen years, or both. Additionally he/she can be disqualified from holding any office of honor, trust, or profit under the U.S government.

Fraud is a broad term that refers to a variety of offenses involving dishonesty or "fraudulent acts". In essence, fraud is the intentional deception of a person or entity by another made for monetary or personal gain.

Federal and state criminal statutes provide for the punishment of persons convicted of fraudulent activity. Interstate fraud andfraud on the federal government are singled out for federal prosecution. The most common federal fraud charges are for mailand wire fraud. Mail and wire fraud statutes criminalize the use of the mails or interstate wires to create or further a schemeto defraud (18 U.S.C.A. §§ 1341, 1342).

The feds are armed to the teeth on this one. They have audio, video, photographs, bank transactions, etc

The only question is who will be the target.
I'm thinking it will be the school which has a coach that most closely resembles the football version of a Rick Pitino type!

Yep. And this guy called it a few years ago.

"I don't think the fabric of higher education as we believe in it and would like to see it function in this country can stand the strain of big-time intercollegiate athletics and maintain its integrity," Byers told Sports Illustratedbefore his death two years ago.

Money's gotten too damn big for graft not to occur. JMO

In before someone says It's illegal because it's against the law.

Well, that's enough for the U.S. Attorney. Their job isn't to make up the law, but enforce the law on the books.

But the reasoning is that football coaches, just like political figures, are public figures, and should not be able to accept bribes to change how they conduct their duties. People would have no issue with the USAO prosecuting a governor shown to be accepting bribes to introduce legislation. Also, don't forget that coaches at three of those four schools are state employees.

From what I've read. It looks like this is more of a criminal thing. Than an NCAA thing. Honestly let's just be happy Swann is the AD rather than Haden.

Yeah, from what I heard, USC immediately put Bland on administrative leave and hired Louis Freeh to investigate. From the info that's out there, it looks like Bland wasn't quite as bad...at least as far as what he got and players he involved. Unless there is more to it, it looks like USC shouldn't get slapped too hard once the NCAA takes their turn at the schools.

Don't know if it's happened yet, but it's being reported that both Pitino and Louisville's AD are expected to be fired today. In fact, it was reported that Pitino has already met with his coaches and told them he expects to be fired.

I've read the same thing.Ot appears this seems to be a federal case and not so much an athletic case. I do like that Swann has been very proactive. Acquiring the services of a former FBI investigator and specialist. To conduct his own investigation. Which is something we would not have seen out of Haden. I like Swanns no stone unturned and full cooperation approach. There will be a lot of arrests spanning from some basketball coaches around the country. I believe the SC party was an assistant. I don't follow basketball. But this really makes you thankful to have a professional in Helton as the SC football coach. As well a very competent and professional AD in Swann.

That was my first impression. They were just getting finder's fees.

When this came out, I thought it was about fixing games for gamblers, but its not.

Looks like it comes down to theft of services from the employing schools.

Yaah.... and when Oregon was cutting 25k checks out of its "books and recruiting materials" fund to street agents to get speed out of Texas to its football team, that was just a "finders fee".
