Not saying he should've been signed back at all costs but George Sherrill and Arthur Rhodes were so bad in spring training every year with the Mariners that they in all right should've played themselves out of a job. Spring training is for pitchers and hitters to work on things and get back into the groove, not to be successful. Why else do all these spring training heros flame out.

I'd argue that that's the case for established players/starters, but for the guys who are trying to make a team I believe Spring Training means a lot. If you're a kid trying to make your first 25-man roster, a part of a position battle or a vet trying to hang on at the major league level, you can't spend a whole lot of time working on your swing or a particular pitch. You work on the stuff your coaching staff wants you to work on, sure, but overall you're trying to impress them enough to get yourself on the roster, which means there needs to be results. If you're Felix or Seager or Cano or Iwakuma, your Spring Training performance isn't going to keep you from making the team if it's bad. If you're Beimel or Walker or Taylor/Miller (before Taylor got hurt), you have to do well if you want to play your way onto the roster.
