You read that title right. The great minds on the Idaho State Board Of Education have banned drinking at on-campus locations for the three state schools that sponsor football. "Safety" was cited as a reason to uphold the ruling.
State Board denies request for alcohol at all Idaho college football games
Vandals football home games going (mostly) dry
Idaho state board says no to alcohol at college football tailgates
Seems idiotic right? Drinking is commonplace at tailgating events at ANY college or professional football game at any stadium in the country. It's half the experience for most fans and may be the majority of it for others. Why ban it? Well, the simple answer is that the people sitting on the Idaho SBOE are small-minded dullards who don't understand college football and predominantly subscribe to a certain religious belief that ( among other things) demonizes alcohol and requires its members to wear magic underwear.
This really is a uniquely Idaho problem. More specifically, it's a Boise problem. That's the only conclusion that can be made here. Mormonism is rampant in Utah, but there are no outright bans on alcohol in that state. There are a bunch of bullshit restrictions, but nothing like this. In Utah they're not stupid enough to ban alcohol from tailgating events. You can drink without issue in the parking lot on gameday at the University of Utah.
No, this Idaho SBOE ban is only partly a result of the Mormon belief system. That absurd religious doctrine combined with the over-inflated sense of self-importance and arrogance you'll find from the people and politicians in Boise is what makes this dangerous.
There's this mindset down in Ada county that everything of importance that happens in the state has to happen in Boise. Nothing outside the treasure valley matters and if you live north of McCall....well their attitude is basically "fuck you". The mental midgets on the SBOE are no different than any of the other self-righteous, self-serving jackasses in southern Idaho looking to push their bullshit on the rest of the state. These retards just happen to have more power than the rest.
It's really sad when you get down to it. At least the Mormons trying to police the morality of the populace in Utah have some sort of common sense. Their politicians know that funding things like roads and education are important. Idaho can't even manage to get somewhat reasonable people in power though. Instead, the Gem State gets stuck with with the special needs politicians.
Idaho is consistently ranked near the bottom in education and the money the state puts towards the public university system is a joke when compared to states of similar size. Idaho high school graduation rates are abysmal and those students who do graduate continue their education at a rate that ranks last nationally. Why aren't these SBOE imbeciles focusing on these problems? I guess that's just not as important as making sure people can carry loaded weapons on campus or banning grown men and women from drinking alcohol at tailgating events. Good job you fucking clowns. The youth in Idaho continue to suffer from the shitty education system, but at least they don't have to witness any ne'er do wells drinking at a football game. And at least they're "safe" knowing that Billy Bob sitting next to them in class has his loaded 9mm ready to go in case he gets too startled by a suspicious brown person in the front row.
You would think that the SBOE would face some backlash due to their decision affecting three different schools. You'd think. But recall that Idaho State is in Pocatello where the vast majority of the population are Mormon. They don't care. In Boise it's only the plurality of citizens that are Mormon, but they have designated zones just outside the main parking lot where alcohol has always been allowed. They'll still be drinking. They have a deal with the Boise PD on this matter and you can bet your ass the enforcement in the stadium parking lot is probably going to be minimal.
That leaves Moscow. Or, as I like to call it, the place that the SBOE was really targeting with this ruling. There are no real options to tailgate other than the Kibbie Dome parking lot in Moscow. If enforced, this ruling would kill the pre-game environment for U of I fans. But as far as they're concerned in Boise, people in Moscow are all "nasty, inebriated" heathens. Fuck them right?
The SBOE members won't lose any sleep over this though. The decision will likely only affect fans in Moscow so the board itself will see little backlash in Boise. They wouldn't make this decision if it was going to cause any big issues for them in the "center of the universe". It's sad. If being chronically stupid wasn't bad enough, these SBOE members are also huge cowards.
Luckily I don't live in Idaho anymore and won't have to deal with this shit. But if I did, I'd be nervous about the direction in which the state was heading. Rulings like this being made by over-controlling scumbags with IQs lower than than room temperature sets a bad precedent.
Of course, I don't know how strictly this is going to be enforced. I'd imagine that the SBOE would have to provide funding to help police this and I don't think the U of I or Moscow PD have any intention of complying with this rule. Hopefully this doesn't end up being a huge issue, but the thought of this ban actually being instituted by the SBOE is absolutely infuriating and truly pathetic.
I'll still be at the home opener so I'll see how this goes. If it's bad I may not attend another home game for the rest of the year. I mean, how the hell am I supposed to watch the Vandals play without being completely hammered?
