I like this idea. I don't think it will happen because of taking out the tough guy in the lineup. I'm hoping Shitty leaves town. Tox loves this guy for whatever reason. Lol

lol :confused2: No way man....not me. You must be thinking of sportfan09. He's the only one who likes having Shitty around.

I have no problem with shitty on the team. I still believe its a good idea to have a true heavy weight ready to come in when needed. I don't dress him every night. I love Rinaldo's heart but he is not a heavy weight.:kk::kk:

I get what you're saying Chy, a deterrent would be nice to have around, but there aren't too many teams around with multiple goons on them anymore and with the depth we have...why waste a spot on a guy who will only see 2-3-4 minutes of ice time?

Shit....if teams like Detroit can be very competetive year after year without a heavy weight...why can't another team be as successful? Just sayin..

i would propose it is because our division tends to have more goons than that of detroit. the rangers, pens, and devs always have a goon. detroit doesnt have to deal with that.

We just saw what our man Simmonds do to a true heavyweight. How did that turn out? Get rid of Shitty and his contract. Free up some money in case we need another guy by trade deadline or something. Heck, we need to give Schenn a chance as well.

my thing is not many teams use a bonafide heavyweight anymore..

pens - macityre, i'll give you.. engelland is a beast too, but is only 6'2 200
devs - clarkson is the closest they have, he got handled by simmonds
rags - mike rupp
isles - konopka was their heavyweight, dont know of one now

caps - hendricks is probably the closest they have, but he's 6'0 - 215
bolts - downie is the only guy that i know of that will even fight on that team
canes - nobody
panthers - none
jets - you could maybe stretch for big buff, but he hasn't broken 100 pims in a season in his career

habs - hal gill i suppose, but he's not a big fighter (43 PIMs in 75 games last year)
bruins - some will say chara, then when i tell them to look up his fights they'll see he has 15 fights since 2002.. but i will give you shawn thorton
sabres - most likely to fight is kaleta, who is 5'11
leafs - rosehill
sens - the aforementioned konopka, but he's only 6'1 210

so there's the east.. and by my count, 4.. i'm tired of looking it up, so i'm going to say the west has at most 5.

so, to the calcs..

2 heavyweights in division = 12 games
2 heavyweights in the east, outside the division = 8 games
5 heavyweights in the west = 5 games

Total = 25 games against a team with a heavyweight (assuming the other heavyweight doesn't get scratched)

25 games x shelley's average of 6 minutes/game = 150 minutes/year for shelley

1.1 mil / 175 minutes = $7,333 off the cap per minute of icetime

no, thank you.

some comparison for you:
hartnell = $3,048/min last season
briere = $4,689/min
pronger = $4,454/min (even with being injured for 32 games)
giroux = $1,938/min (thats taking his salary this year instead of last year)
carter = $3,472/min
richards = $3,736/min

if you think having a heavyweight on the roster is worth paying him $3,000 more per minute ice time than anyone you could possibly consider our best player last year, you're out of your mind.

he played more than 25 games last year, but the only real argument is so he can play when we play a team w/ a heavyweight.. because if we're not, he's going to be scratched this season.. there's too much talent to play him when they dont need him

I agree. The east does have more goons in it, but the Hawks have Mayers, the Jackets have Dorsett, the Preds have Stortini & McGrattan and the Blues have Stewart. Meanwhile Detroit has....

Listen...I love fighting and I believe in protecting certain players, but if things get chippy we still turn to Zac or Wayne to even things up.

The Bruins have plenty of hard hitters, your review is a joke.

where did i mention hard hitters anywhere?

obviously they have a bunch of hitters, but really, who else is a bonafide heavyweight that is paid to be out there to fight, aside from thorton? thats all shelley is.

name a few guys that are too big for simmonds, hartnell, rinaldo, or walker to fight.

I wasn't sure what you were using to define heavyweight. :noidea:

Bruins dont have a straight up "goon". But plenty of guys that can throw down. I still watch that B's/Stars game from last season. :heh:

touche.. missed one, add 4 more games for shelley (a whopping 24 more minutes on the season)

still at around 6k/minute

the second part is my point.. the flyers have plenty of guys that will throw down and be serviceable 95% of the time.. there's only a handful of guys in the league that i would consider 'needing jody shelley to fight him' to be a valid point..

closest thing they have IMO.. he's 6'1 220, which isn't huge, but i'd definitely rather have shelley for him then risking a skilled player that's tough.. he's crazy, and he's paid to be a fighter

Sly, how about you give us Lucic and you can have both Shitty and Hartnell.

My theory for the Shitty signing was that Homer in the back of his mind remember a Leafs game from the season before the signing. Orr was brutal on us that game, and us being "Bullies" we needed someone like that...for a while...at any cost

Shelley continues to be a complete waste of a roster spot, except now more than ever do to the fact that we have about 3-4 younger, faster, cheaper players ready, willing and able to take his spot. For just $650k more, we have Talbot or Simmonds. You're getting way, way more bang for your buck with those guys or even a Read, Nodl, Betts or Rinaldo that are all cheaper than the costly $1.1 million for 4-5 minutes per game of Shelley.
