He was a minor league free agent acquisition in the middle of last season and was re-signed in the offseason. I thought it was interesting to note that, essentially, the 2nd most productive bat (again, not saying much) for Richmond was let go. I do have to say that I didn't understand why he was picked up to begin with or re-signed for that matter. Just when I thought maybe it made sense to have him, they let him go.
You know they are just trolling you, right?

Move to the bullpen? Move to Richmond? Move to San Jose? What do you see being best for him?
I have no idea. My initial idea was to try to trade him for someone else’s disappointment, but those trades rarely/never happen. I do not know enough about his peripherals to know if he is more suited to the pen or not, but he certainly appears to not be suited to the rotation.

He's been working exclusively out of the stretch for 3 games now. 2 were so-so, still had a lot of walks but didn't give up any runs. Of course the walks are the huge problem here. He has no command. His stuff is still crisp, but he just doesn't have a clue where it's going.

I could see the Giants putting him on the DL, getting him down to extended ST and working on some things there (of course, extended ST is about to become the AZL, so he won't be able to hide as much).

He can work out of the Pen where his fastball will play up and he just needs one breaking pitch. But right now he just needs to figure out where the ball is going. I think mentally there's something going on right now, too.

Ray Black, meanwhile, has an 18% K percentage in 20.1 innings. 40 K's

Still hasn't gone back-to-back games yet, and in fact in the last week+ his rest between appearances have been stretched out more.

I get the feeling that we'll see Black in September, if he is still healthy. With the performance of the bullpen, there is no reason to bring him up now.

The Giants will have to add him to the 40-man roster at some point, or he's going to find a team who will. Assuming he keeps this up. September sounds right

Maybe they are going super light with his workload so that he is totally rested come July/August/September and they have call him up then and give rest Tom one of the “real” guys so there are still pitches left in their arms comes Sept/Oct.

:noidea:

Who knows, but I want to see him at some point. I mean he's struckout more than 50% of the batters he's faced over his last 8 games, with only two walks.

I don't care how he preformed the fact that he did is HUGE. Next step will be to see how he rebounds, and then try it again.

This is a massive step forward, and if he holds up bodes really well.

It was a slow start for Heliot Ramos, which was not entirely unexpected. He's so incredibly toolsy, but also incredibly raw. The Giants pushed him hard with an assignment in Augusta, his first taste of the rigors of a full season.

He's currently batting .236/.313/.385 with 5 homers, 17 RBI, 28 runs, one steal and a 100 wRC+. While you may look at that and feel discouraged, I'll give you some reasons to actually be encouraged.

First, he's clearly worked very hard on his plate approach and the results so far are intriguing. After a 32% K percentage in the Arizona League last year, a lot of people raised the red flags on him. Which is fair, a 32% K rate is bad anywhere. He was also walking just 6.6% of the time. He was swinging at everything and either missing, or crushing it (.645 SLG%). It was another reason people felt he would struggle, more advanced pitching would eat him up.

So what has he done this year? He's cut the K% down all the way to 26%, a still high but certainly manageable number, and his walk rate is up to 7.8%.

To me, that right there is a good sign. I don't even need to look at the other numbers and just feel good about that (hoping the he sustains/improves it through the season). The fact that this 18 year old kid (yeah, he's STILL just 18 years old!) goes into his first taste of full-season ball, gets seriously humbled, but still manages to improve his plate approach over his first 2 months is pretty dang good.

Second, he's starting to heat up a bit. Since May 6 he batting .260/.345/.440 with a 123 wRC+. Three of his homers have come in that span. He's also improved his K and BB % even more since then, at 22.1% and 9.7% respectively. If he's reaching those percentages over a full season, his talent with the bat will take over and he'll be just fine.

Third, this dude is still so, so young. He'd be right in the average age of the high schoolers in this year's draft. He's two months YOUNGER than Jared Kelenic, who was drafted 6th overall out of high school. Think about that, Ramos is of an age with most of the current high schoolers in this year's draft, and he's already well into full-season ball and holding his own.

Christian Arroyo was drafted out of high school in 2013 and, like Ramos, tore a hole through the rookie league the year he was drafted. The Giants also aggressively promoted Arroyo to Augusta. He had a better feel at the plate than Ramos, so many thought he would do okay, but he instead crashed-and-burned in his first rodeo before ultimately getting injured. The Giants sent him to Salem afterward where he was more comfortable.

Arroyo had 31 games in Augusta, Ramos is at 51.

I agree with your assessment. Considering his age, his numbers are not bad at all. I hope they keep him the full season at Augusta and let him repeat in 2019. If he hits well, a midseason promotion to San Jose.
