Tuesday 6/12

Pitching Line: IP-H-R-ER-BB-K

AAA: Sacramento River Cats were off

AA: Richmond Flying Squirrels WALKED-OFF 2-1 (32-29)

Jeff Arnold 2-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI
Jerry Sands 2-4, 2 2B, 2 K

Garrett Williams 6.0-3-1-1-2-8
Patrick Ruotolo 2.0-0-0-0-0-3
Caleb Simpson 1.0-0-0-0-1-1

Definitely time to put Pat Ruotolo in your memory bank. He's had no issues since being promoted to Richmond thus far, sporting a 0.75 ERA in 12 innings. On the season he has a 1.19 ERA with 39 K's in 30.1 innings, only 17 hits given up. In his career he has a 1.40 ERA across 102.2 innings with 150 K's, 38 BB's and 61 hits.

Drafted in 2016 in the 27th round out of UConn, Ruotolo throws 92-94 with the fastball, 78-80 with a curveball.

A+: San Jose Giants lost 5-1 (32-33)

Gio Brusa 1-4, HR (11th), 1 RBI, 1 R, 1 K

Raffi Vizcaino 6.0-3-2-2-1-5
Doug Still 2.0-4-3-2-0-1

A: Augusta GreenJackets lost 7-5 (35-28)

Orlando Garcia 2-4, 2B, 1 R, 1 K
Logan Baldwin 1-4, 3B, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 K
Jacob Gonzalez 2-4, 1 R, 1 K

Garrett Cave 1.1-4-7-5-4-0
Tyler Schimpf 2.2-1-0-0-0-4
Olbis Parra 3.0-0-0-0-0-4
John Russell 2.0-2-0-0-0-4

Cave just had no command in this game, throwing 53 pitches in less than two innings and only 23 strikes.

Rookie: DSL Giants WON 13-4 (5-4)

Luis Toribio 3-4, HR (4th!), 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Ghordy Santos 2-4, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Omar Medina 4-5, 2 2B, 4 RBI
Samuel Jorge 2-4, 2B, 1 R, 1 K

Toribio is of to a great start. Has four homers already, with 10 walks and 11 K's. He's batting .367/.548/.833 in 10 games. Remember the big 3 factors, homerun power, K/BB ratio and SB%.

Toribio is one of the signings from this most recent cycle, signing for the maximum $300K.

Ivan Armstrong 4.0-4-2-2-1-7
Jesus Gomez 2.2-4-1-0-1-6
Cristian Acosta 1.1-1-1-1-2-2
Willian Suarez 1.0-0-0-0-1-0

Armstrong is another interesting kid. He's fucking huge, 6'5" 250 as a 17 year old (allegedly). Throws 94 with the fastball.

Wednesday 6/13

Pitching Line: IP-H-R-ER-BB-K

AAA: Sacramento River Cats WON 7-5 (32-34)

Steven Duggar 3-5, 2B, 1 RBI, 1 R, 1 K, 1 SB (10th)
Gregor Blanco 3-5, HR (1st), 2B, 2 RBI, 1 R
Ronnie Freeman 1-4, HR (2nd), 3 RBI, 1 R, 2 K

Taylor Hill 5.0-7-4-4-1-3
Manny Parra 1.0-1-1-1-0-1
Ray Black 1.0-2-0-0-0-2
Derek Law 2.0-0-0-0-0-1

Ray Black seems to be bouncing back from his b2b outings last week

AA: Richmond Flying Squirrels WON 3-0 (33-29)

Miguel Gomez 2-4, HR (3rd), 2 RBI, 1 R
Jerry Sands 1-3, HR (10th), 1 RBI, 1 R, 1 BB

Chase Johnson 4.0-4-0-0-0-6
Mike Connolly 2.0-1-0-0-0-3
Will LaMarche 2.0-2-0-0-0-4
Dillon McNamara 1.0-1-0-0-0-3

Some excellent pitching from the Richmond staff. 16-0 K-BB ratio.

Johnson is slowly ramping up his activity in his TJ recovery. Best start of the year for him, tying his longest in terms of innings, and the most pitches he's thrown (63). I'll be interested if the Giants keep him in the rotation or if they're just trying to build up strength and transition him back to the Pen. If he keeps dominating, might stick in the rotation.

A+: San Jose Giants lost 6-0 (32-34)

Jacob Heyward 3-4, 1 assist
Heath Quinn 2-4, 2 K

Melvin Adon 2.2-4-1-1-3-2
Orleny Quiroz 1.1-1-0-0-1-0
Peter Lannoo 2.0-3-4-4-4-1
Jeff Burke 2.0-2-1-1-1-0

Bleh. Adon was pretty bad, but throwing in the 100s again.

A: Augusta GreenJackets lost 3-2 (35-29)

Jacob Gonzalez 1-3, HR (5th), 1 RBI, 1 R, 2 K, 1 error (18th)
Ryan Kirby 2-4, 2B, 1 R
Heliot Ramos 1-4, 2B, 2 K

John Gavin 5.2-4-1-1-2-5
Camilo Doval 1.1-0-0-0-0-3
Frank Rubio 2.0-2-2-1-1-0. Gave up the tying run the 8th, winning run in the 9th.

My boy Doval continues to impress. 34 K's in his last 22 innings, just 16 hits. 1.64 ERA

Rookie: DSL Giants lost 10-9 (5-5)

Luigi Pichardo 2-4, 3 RBI, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 assist
Jean Pena 0-1, 4 BB, 2 R, 1 K

Melvin Martinez 1.2-3-3-2-5-0
Sonny Vargas 2.2-5-4-4-2-1
Samuel Quintana 1.2-3-2-2-0-3
Jose Cruz 2.0-1-1-1-1-3

Fairly typical DSL games here.

The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes announced their roster. No Alex Canario (sad), but yes Gregory Santos (yay!). Full roster: Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Team Roster | Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Roster

The Giants really seem to be taking advantage of the reserve spots on minor league rosters. I have not seen this in previous seasons but they are regularly moving guys on rosters for a few days. It is especially prominent with Augusta's pitching staff. Jason Bahr, Garrett Cave, John Gavin, Jose Marte and Andy Phillips (when healthy) have been on the merry-go-round. For example, if you look at the roster tonight, Bahr would not show up on it. Check back a couple days later and Bahr will be back on but one of the other guys will be off. Its a very interesting way of getting around the 25 man limit.

And tonight, Daniel Camarena, who's been amazing, is not listed on Sacramento's roster. He's been replaced by Taylor Hill, who was off the roster for a few days. Myles Schroder is also off. If you look at any of these guys' player page on the days they are not on the roster, it will simply list their status as "reassigned to another team/level".

I never knew why teams didn't use it more

I assume that it is a lot more work for either the farm team's front office and/or the farm director's office to do this. I would guess that the new guy (David Bell, right?) thought it would be smart to utilize it.

What I cannot figure out is the difference between temporarily "re-assigning" a player and putting them on the temporary inactive list. The Giants have utilized the latter in past years but I've only seen it done once this year, in San Jose, when Tomlinson was on the roster for a few games. They placed Van Horn on that list until Tomlinson got moved up to Sacramento.

@Stokes1931 started it, just helping him every other week. Trying to provide some context to the numbers, when we can. Glad you enjoy them!

So this sucks. Apparently Chase Johnson was hit with a foul ball in the dugout last night after his start and went to the hospital. He's since been released and placed on the DL

I know that the Giants like to re-cycle guys back to the farm, but this is getting ridiculous:

137.png
June 14, 2018 San Francisco Giants signed free agent RHP Jose Valdez to a minor league contract.
t105.png
June 14, 2018 Sacramento River Cats activated RHP Jose Valdez.
t105.png
June 6, 2018 RHP Jose Valdez elected free agency.
t105.png
June 3, 2018 San Francisco Giants sent RHP Jose Valdez outright to Sacramento River Cats.
137.png
June 1, 2018 San Francisco Giants designated RHP Jose Valdez for assignment.

Wander Franco is listed on this roster and I thought "he's a Cal League All-Star but isn't hitting like one, so I get why they move him down" but then I look at San Jose's roster and see him listed there. Turns out, they are brothers. The one in San Jose was claimed off waivers last December from Kansas City. The one in Salem was signed in April after the Astros released him in spring training. Just be glad they haven't signed their dad, his name is also Wander.

He was actually a rule 5 guy, in the minor league portion, the elder Wander Franco. And if I recall, there's like 5 Wander Franco's who are all related. The Tampa Bay Rays have the best one

Only two show up on Baseball Reference. Here's what MiLB.com shows on the transactions for the two (I thought the one in San Jose was the Rule 5 pick but that is not how he is listed):
t105.png
December 14, 2017 Sacramento River Cats claimed SS Wander Franco off waivers from Wilmington Blue Rocks.
118.png
March 26, 2017 3B Wander Franco assigned to Kansas City Royals.

April 12, 2018 San Francisco Giants signed free agent 3B Wander Franco to a minor league contract.
t565.png
March 25, 2018 Quad Cities River Bandits released 3B Wander Franco.

The Rays' Franco was a 2017 international signing and hasn't appeared in a game yet.

I was at the rule 5 draft this year, I can confirm that MLB.com doesn't know their own stuff haha
