I agree with your assessment. Considering his age, his numbers are not bad at all. I hope they keep him the full season at Augusta and let him repeat in 2019. If he hits well, a midseason promotion to San Jose.

I'd agree with that being the track right now.

I will say that if he continues to show improvement in his plate approach, I could see the Giants eagerly wanting him to jump to San Jose even with pedestrian counting stats. San Jose is a better environment for him overall; better ballparks to hit in, better weather, closer to head honchos, typically closer to better coaching.

Not that Augusta is bad, and the coaches there seem great. San Jose is just a little better. If he finishes the season and the brass think he can handle the jump, I think they'll do it.

Just found out that the Giants released Jose Vizcaino, Jr yesterday. He started off his professional career looking like a potential in 2015 and even had decent numbers with San Jose in 2016 but his career took a sharp turn for the worse last year and only got in one game this year, with Augusta.

I had solid hopes for him after his draft and subsequent year in Salem.

I was willing to write-off his 2016 due to injuries (he looked pretty good before he went down, then wasn't the same after).

I lost hope when he went down to Augusta and struggled. I gave up on him when he was assigned to Augusta again this year.

Pitching Line: IP-H-R-ER-BB-K

AAA: Sacramento River Cats WALKED-OFF 3-2 (31-33)

Steven Duggar 4-5, 3 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI
Trevor Brown 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Chase d'Arnaud 1-3, 2B, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Chris Shaw 0-4, 3 K

Duggar is up to .288/.365/.441 now after battling mediocrity to open the season. His K rate is still much too high at nearly 30 percent. That will need to come down, or he'll get carved up in the bigs. But he's batting .350 with a .953 OPS over his last 23 games.

Daniel Camarena 5.1-4-1-1-3-7
Pierce Johnson 1.1-2-1-1-0-2
Manny Parra 1.1-0-0-0-0-2
Ray Black 1.0-0-0-0-0-1

Camarena has given the River Cats a huge boost since signing as a free agent. Has a 0.78 ERA in 4 starts.

AA: Richmond Flying Squirrels lost 7-6 (31-29)

Luigi Rodriguez 2-4, 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 CS (7th)
Miguel Gomez 2-5, 3B, 2 RBI, 1 R
Ryan Howard 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 CS (4th), 1 error (11th)
Matt Lipka 1-2, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB

Jordan Johnson 5.0-4-1-0-2-7
Franklin Van Gurp 3.0-3-4-4-1-3
Carlos Diaz 0.1-1-1-1-0-1
Dan Slania 0.2-2-1-1-1-1

Van Gurp, up from Augusta to provide some emergency depth, struggled.

A+: San Jose Giants WON 16-5 (32-31)

Gio Brusa 3-5, 3 HR (8th, 9th and 10th), 6 RBI, 5 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB (2nd)
Jalen Miller 4-6, 2 RBI, 1 R, 1 K, 1 CS (2nd)
Brandon Van Horn 3-4, HR (3rd), 2B, 3 RBI, 1 R, 1 K
Sandro Fabian 3-6, 2 2B, 2 R, 1 RBI
Bryce Johnson 2-6, 3B, 3 R, 1 K, SB (11th)

Just a monster game from Brusa. He has 10 homers in just 47 games. He's a AAAA player at best, but maybe there's a chance he makes a September roster one year and provides a spark.

Also Jalen Miller, Wander Franco, Sandro Cabrera and Logan Webb have been named Cal League All-Stars

Sandro Cabrera 3.0-5-5-3-4-2
Jeff Burke 3.0-2-0-0-2-0
Nolan Riggs 3.0-0-0-0-1-2

A: Augusta GreenJackets lost 4-0 (35-26)

Manuel Geraldo 2-4, SB (15th)

Joey Marciano 5.0-5-2-1-3-3
Caleb Baragar 3.0-5-2-2-0-1

Rookie: DSL Giants were off

Some final notes:

The Salem-Keizer Short Season League kicks off this week, and the now TWO Giants' Arizona Rookie League squads will start next week.

Assignments for these teams will be really interesting.

Will Alex Canario and Gregory Santos jump to Salem? What 2018 draftees will make the jump (when they sign)? That roster could be verrryyy interesting, especially if they get Joey Bart. I'll have to make a trip up there to check 'em out.

The two AZL teams will be named the Giants Black and the Giants Orange. Typically the Black team has more of the interesting talent, and if Canario and Santos don't jump to Salem, they'll likely be on that squad. We should find out any day now.

Augusta has now lost 7 in a row. Their pitching has been fine, but they have stopped hitting. At one point they were 35-19, which is a great record, especially considering how awful last year was. I don't think some of the pitchers will stay beyond their ASB, and may move up to San Jose. Franklin Van Gurp has already made the jump to Richmond. He got lit up in his first game there, but looks to be a solid pitcher. Richmond's bullpen has been terrible lately, blowing late leads several times in the last two weeks. Maybe Van Gurp can help. I really expect something else at the end of his name, like Franklin Van Gurp III or Franklin Van Gurp, Esq.

I'm not sure Van Gurp will stay with Richmond. The farm has been doing some interesting things this year, one of them being shuttling guys from Augusta to Richmond (or San Jose to Sacramento) to pitch in a game or two and then go back down. The Augusta to Richmond and back shuttle has already had Peter Lanoo (who since got promoted to San Jose) and Frank Rubio. The San Jose to Sacramento and back shuttle has seen Conner Menez, Dylan Rheault, Nolan Riggs, Caleb Baragar (since demoted to Augusta) and Connor Overton (since promoted to Richmond). Its an interesting development that I don't remember seeing as much of this early in previous seasons.

Beede reaches a new low. I don't think he left because of an injury. I think it was purely based off of his struggles, and perhaps the manager trying to save him from getting shelled. He faced just seven batters, walking 2, hitting 1, giving up 2 hits and getting two flyouts. It took him 35 pitches, and only 15 were for strikes. He's a mess right now.

AA: Richmond Flying Squirrels were off

A+: San Jose Giants lost 5-4 (32-32)

Heath Quinn 2-4, 1 R
Matt Winn 1-4, HR (7th), 2 RBI, 1 R, 2 K
Jalen Miller 2-5, 1 K

Conner Menez 5.0-3-3-3-3-2
Connor Overton 2.0-2-2-2-1-2
Rodolfo Martinez 1.0-0-0-0-0-2

A: Augusta GreenJackets lost 5-4 (35-27)

Rob Calabrese 1-4, HR (5th), 3 RBI, 1 R, 2 K
Orlando Garcia 1-3, 2 R, 1 BB

Jason Bahr 5.0-6-5-5-2-5
John Timmins 2.0-1-0-0-1-4
Camilo Doval 1.0-0-0-0-1-2
Ryan Koziol 1.0-1-0-0-0-0

GreenJackets have 3 All-Stars: Manuel Geraldo, John Gavin and Joey Marciano.

Rookie: DSL Giants lost 5-3 (4-4)

Jorge Samuel 1-4, 2B, 1 K
Robinson Batista 1-4, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K

Lylon Lopez 5.0-5-3-3-0-4

Yeah he was just there to provide some depth. In fact I think he returned to Augusta after the game last night

Pretty disappointing for Augusta. They had a great chance to clinch the playoffs, but now looks like they'll have to play out the second half. If they clinched, I think a lot of guys would have been shipped off, like Geraldo for instance. Now they might play it a bit safer.

Van Gurp is back in Augusta

Good points. Menez was great in his first start for Sacramento, then he was awful in his second start.

FVG is not destined to be long in Augusta, methinks.

Yep, just saw that poking around the Augusta roster page.

Van Gurp is definitely worthy of a promotion. There are two relievers in San Jose doing well, another three who are decent and the recent are getting knocked around, but there are also 5 pitchers on the dl and most are relievers. I don't know the severity of any of their injuries, but it certainly seems, right now, that Van Gurp could easily get moved up.

Wow the cupboard is bare. We have no prospects worth anything. Remos is busting out in A ball. Can't hit worth shit. Beede is a bust. Most likely won't amount to anything other than an AAA pitcher and even there he is trash. The drafting on this team over the past decade has blown. None of their top picks have been decent.

We way over spend in free agency and draft garbage. Its no wonder we are mired in mediocrity.

I should have chosen my words more carefully.
