So I've been pondering this question for many years now and I made this image to help the question out. Any input?

For the record:

Notre Dame does not have 13 self-claimed titles.
USC has 11 self-claimed titles

Too many other problems to mention.

well done.

Love these type of graphs.

Before looking at your chart I would have answered USC and Alabama.

After looking at the chart I say the same thing. USC and Alabama.

again. Nice werk.

Awesome chart, I would agree with most, Alabama is the gold standard in CFB. Everyone else is chasing.

I would put USC on par with Bama.

I think too much is being put in claimed titles. I think that is a very subject category. OU has a better claim than I thought. More ranked seasons, more 10+ wins, more Heismans, and a lot more conference titles.

Its Notre Dame.

Their popularity and national appeal have them always playing up in bowl games.

They have a lot of recent bowl game losses....but they probably should not have been slotted in those games to begin with.

A bowl committee will select a 6-6 bowl eligible Notre Dame over just about anyone with 8 win.

A 9 win Notre Dame is going to get selected over 11 win teams sometimes.

There is a slight knock on Alabama.

Alabama never had the elite all time rival every year like the other choices.

Ohio State/Michigan and Notre Dame/USC always play each other.

And, you could argue that maybe Nebraska or Texas belong in the discussion as well.
Oklahoma played BOTH of THEM every year.

Alabama never had a historic elite superpower to tack on losses like the other choices.
Tennessee, Georgia, LSU, and others are historically just miss programs....almost there....

Both Michigan and Oklahoma have 42 conference championships.

Four years ago I'd have chosen Notre Dame. Today I choose Alabama.

That's a solid list and each program could make a case. I am surprised it doesn't include All-Americans. ND, I believe, owns that category.

I overlooked "NFL draft picks." Not quite an All-American category but close enough.

In my opinion, only AP titles and major bowl records should have a say in this. The fact you're in a major bowl or title game means you did fine in your conference, but your titles and winning percentage in major bowl game kind of shows the ability to go out and take down the top teams from other conferences as well.

Why did Alabama subject us to "Got 12" for about 20 years and then when they get the lead in AP titles start telling us that only AP titles matter?

I think you can eliminate ND, OhSU and Michigan immediately. No way to call a team with a losing bowl record the "best of all time."

It'd be nice to see a few meaningful bowl games played in Big Ten country.

The university claims that shit, they makes shirts, and we buy them and flaunt it. However, the majority of Alabama fans will tell you that they only claim 10 or 11 honestly, not the 15 that university claims.
