Rublings are, the title could be slapped on him after the season, but we still need a ton more help than just a title change.
It is well known that he has rubbed a lot of people the wrong way through the years, but what do you guys know about his talent evaluation skills?

This is what Floyd Reese wrote about Smith in 2008
A.J. Smith, San Diego Chargers: Smith is a longtime talent evaluator who earned his spurs working under John Butler. He is a draft specialist with a keen eye and the guts to make a trade or move that will improve the value of his club. Smith is not an everyday shopper, but an opportunist, and he is smart. He is willing to take a chance on someone who might not pass every test, but he has yet to be wrong.

He apparently has the chops to do the job and could do a good job of it. Does he have the stones to stand up to Danny is the real question we have to ask about any one we bring in and give the title of GM/VP of player personnel acquisition.

Too funny, I've been asking about him and his role for years. He is an A-Hole but what's another to the bunch? He built damn good teams in San Diego.

What kind of rumblings are you hearing?

Some fatso Redskins Insider said he has heard it from several sources.

The way I have heard it is he is a consultant and reports directly to Dan. Why Dan needs a Talent consultant reporting to him is anyones guess........:noidea:

jy19 is right. Smith is a consultant. Smith grew up in RI where I am from. He has good friends still here that he stays in contact with. The reason why I know this that one of his good friends is a customer of my fathers. Hey maybe I will get in the draft room one day. lol.

AJ Smith fired Marty Schottenhiemer after a 14-2 season because Marty interviewed his brother Kurt Schottenhiemer for the defensive coordinator position which was held by Wade Phillips my older brother is a Chargers fan and he does not like AJ Smith and then after firing Marty they brought in Norv Turner

Sounded more like a suggestion than any inside info. As for AJ in San Diego he fired Marty because he felt that he had a championship team and Marty time and again fell short in the playoffs due to his conservative approach. I ain't buying for a second the theory that he got fired for interviewing his brother.

Marty Schottenheimer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If that is the case then Smith is an idiot. As I recall during my time in SoCal (listening to the Chargers flagship station) not many fans nor the media particularly liked Smith. The Chargers lost a fluke game to the Pats after that 14-2 season. They picked off Brady in the closing minutes but the DB fumbled the ball - just dumb luck.

Subsequent to this the Chargers did not have a whole lot of luck in playoffs in spite of quite often having what was believed to be the best talent in the NFL. Not sure what was worse Smith firing Marty or Snyder firing him several years before that to go a few years with the clown team of Vinnie and Spurrier.

Take a look at Marty's coaching tree - wow.

Oh don't get me wrong, I was a Marty guy. But the fact is dumb luck or bad coaching the bottom line is Marty's teams always played great till it mattered the most. When he built great teams that continued to fall short in the playoffs year after year in not 1, not 2, but 3 different stops I can see why Smith figured he was the Tony Romo of NFL coaches. His record in the playoffs speaks for itself.

MArty as a coach at least makes it worth watching games come late November/December. Can you honestly say you would be upset to have a coach around that we had a realistic shot at even playing for the chance to get into the playoffs??

Barring the 2012 fluke, we havent sniffed the playoffs since Gibbs 2, and it was a very long time before that as well.

He sounds a lot like Ted Thompson.

Even if that was the case then why - oh why - would you replace him with Norv Turner?!

Not defending the hiring of Norv, just trying to explain the reason to move on from Marty and I just don't buy that it was because he interviewed his brother. After failing year after year despite being loaded offensively Norv represented the Anti-Marty, an offensive guy who could get all that firepower to the Super Bowl, something Marty was never able to do in all of his stops. Maybe he saw another Joe Torre, a smart mind who was saddled with a lack of talent in the past. Looking back that was not so unreasonable at the time, he had little to work with in DC and Oakland
