I still think I'm leaning towards Kawhi signing a supermax before FA starts. Maybe not a full 5 year deal. But perhaps enough to bridge to his 10 year season.

A supermax is a helluva lot of money to turn down. If Kawhi does, we know he really, really wanted out.

Yeah, the only way that I can see the Spurs directly trading Kawhi to the Lakers is if Kawhi drives his trade value with other teams down to the point that taking another deal just to keep him from the Lakers would look stupid.

Even then, they might try to involve a 3rd team so that it doesn't entirely look like they traded him to the Lakers. lol

That's actually a realistic scenario quite honestly. I'm just saying, you know Pop's public perception - he's a crotchety old bastard. I could see him holding onto Kawhi without signing an extension just so he loses out on money and has to find a way into the Lakers (presuming they sign PG and Lebron) where he'd likely have to sign less than the max. Just hypothesizing here.

thats very true...I was going to mention Rondo as well for an example of a guard that struggled with free throw shooting.

the one big difference between Rondo and Ball is that- Rondo had a high shooting percentage from the floor most of his career since he was a very good athlete that was great at finishing at the rim. Ball not so much.

Ball's closest comps are guys like Rondo and Rubio in some/most ways.

Agreed. and that reminds of something a friend of mine told me before last year's draft, he was saying he didn't see all the hype for Lonzo I asked him why and he said "Lonzo Ball is just Ricky Rubio with a loud father" LOL!

Some people are reporting that one of the shoe companies let Kawhi know that if he can get to a bigger market (LA/NY), that he will have a huge deal coming his way. So its possible that this is still a money play.

Haven't heard that from a reputable source though, so who knows if true.

It makes sense though.

That's the thing. I don't think that the Spurs have offered him a supermax and are reluctant to do so given what happened last season.

IMO, this is why so much hinges on the Pop/Kawhi meeting. If they can fix the trust issues, then I expect the Spurs to give him a supermax contract of at least 3 years. If he remains unsigned on July 2nd then I suspect he will wind up in Philly or Boston.

That's a damn good question. Off the top of my head I can't think of one. Can you?

Eric Snow shot like 20% from the FT line his freshmen year of college.

Lonzo's shot is bad, but I don't think it isn't that bad. At least some of his bad percentage has to be attributed to mental struggles and confidence.

Will Kawhi even be offered the Supermax though? That doesn't seem certain at this point.

Had to look this up but Snow's freshman year @ MSU he took 25 FT attempts. But 20% is still lousy. His best year was his sr. year when he shot .608. But Snow wasn't the # 2 overall pick or even a starter like Lonzo.

As, I believe it was @flyerhawk said, it likely comes down to the meeting with Pop. If it goes well, he probably gets offered the supermax, if not...he gone.

Why wouldn't they? It's literally the only thing that would possibly persuade him to stay in San Antonio

Lonzo hit 66 of 98 at UCLA for .673. Not good, but a hell of a lot better than what he shot this past season with the Lakers.

He also hit 80 of 194 three's for .412.

That would seem to indicate that he at least has the ability to get better at both. But, it's on him. He needs to do the work.

I dont think Snow was ever , based on stats, the worst shooter in the league like Lonzo was last year..

Yeah... that's not even close to being true

You're right. Of players that had as many FT attempts as Ball, there was one other player that was worse than him. Kosta Koufas. Of players with at least 300 field goal attempts Ball also doesn't quite hit rock bottom. Quincy Acy takes it from Ball. True Shooting %? Again, 2nd to last ahead of Frankie Smokes.

It is a chicken or egg kind of question.

The report suggest the Spurs won't offer the super max unless Kawhi re-engages in their program. But Kawhi won't re-engage without the supermax and at least some contrition on the part of the team.

Both parties feel like the victim here.
