G is freaking stacked. Goodfellas, Godfather I & II, and Good Will Hunting all make a lot of peoples all time top 10 lists. And Gladiator is certainly no slouch either.

I agree with Empire Strikes Back standing alone, but the very first movie that started it all has to be Star Wars: A New Hope, or even just Star Wars, right? You can't list A New Hope for "A" I would think?

Stars Wars is Star Wars.

I'm not much of a LOTR fan and I'd probably go with something other than Star Wars, but that's a damn good list.

I'm thinking we should settle on 5 per letter, the more choices the better the chance of ties. We should probably set up another thread to let everyone pick their top 5 for each letter, starting with A obviously...

While Good Will Hunting is my personal favorite movie of all time, I can't argue with The Godfather being over it. What I will argue is that The Godfather II is widely known as one of the few movies ever that the sequel is better than the original.

There are a ton of great movies starting with S. Star Wars, the original Star Wars, is still one of the most beloved movies of all time. And then Saving Private Ryan, Spartacus a personal favorite of mine etc etc etc.

Yeah you have to like LOTR of course but if you did and/or you read the books, the 3 movie set is a pretty amazing accomplishment. Pretty close to a 12 hour movie of the trilogy.

AMC had the Godfather I and II on recently and I still think the first is the better one but not by much, that's for sure. Robert DeNiro is really good as the young Corleone and Pacino is of course excellent. Both great movies.

And yeah I loved Good Will Hunting too. This is a good thread.

I agree that "A"s and "The"s should not count.
A Clockwork Orange will be listed under "C" and An Officer and a Gentleman will be listed under "O"

I agree and those who voted for A Clockwork Orange, Streetcar Named Desire, A Beautiful Mind, Officer and a Gentleman PLEASE vote for another A movie.

We will post 3 or 4 letters a day for the next week or so to get the lists to approx 5 per letter. Each letter will remain open for about a day (if the thread is still active, I think it is OK to keep it open).

Once we start to post the polls, I think we should have run-offs until one movie has 50% +1 of the vote (that way Godfather and Kill Bill do not potentially cancel themselves out). I think 2 days per poll should be plenty.

Thoughts?

And what is the verdict for A New Hope? Is that under "S" or "N"?

Once the Noms are closed for a letter, should we go right into the poll, or get all letters set before we do any polls?
