I'm not an Oregon fan. I don't have a horse in this race.

Marcus Mariota is as good or better than Wilson was in his last season in nearly every area. He's a far superior down the field passer. He's as good throwing on the run. He's a better athlete. He's one of the best play action quarterbacks I've ever seen at any level.

If he lands in a reasonable situation and doesn't get hurt, he'll have an outstanding career. I consider him to be in the Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck tier of basically a sure thing.

Mariota is not a can't miss prospect. But when you have a top-5 pick, a glaring need at QB, and there is one available that matches your needs on offense and in the locker room.....you take the best QB available. You assume that your coaching staff can correct that QB's deficiencies and you make a calculated risk that could change your franchise and initiate some hope within your fan base and locker room.

Fuck trading down and fuck drafting some random "could be great" prospect at a position that isn't going to win you games. You pick the best player available at the most important position on the field to build your franchise around.

The post that pointed out a few criteria is right...RW went to a good team...TB & TN are more than a QB away from playoff caliber.

Should do okay, but doubtful he will be a top 10 QB.

These days, QB's are operating out of the shot gun all the time in the NFL. But that isn't even his argument anyways.

He's routinely saying that he can't throw to other options or from the pocket. When he can. Then he changes his tune to "well he can only do it in his system". As if the clown as seen Marcus throw in another system.

All we know for certain is that Marcus Mariota can hit any receiver from the pocket at an alarmingly high rate. Saying he can't do it in the NFL is all unsubstantiated guesswork.

Yes they do run out of the shotgun in the NFL. The difference are the other players on defense who can cover the crap out of the WRs. That makes the windows extremely tight. The windows that Mariota has now are not nearly as small as they will be at the next level. Currently from the games I have watched this year for Oregon he does not have to do "Timing Throws" a lot. Which is a big part of the QB in the NFL. He will have to learn a pro style offense with being under center. There will be a learning curve as with all QBs. Hell look at Peyton Manning his rookie year. Not saying Mariota is not capable, but to expect him to need to refine and learn some other things.

And actually due to Oregon's offensive scheme that is what he was saying. Just not in a "nice" way.

The only can't-miss QBs of our life have been Aikman, Peyton, (Maybe Big Ben), and Luck. Sorry, I'm not anointing Mariota based on Kiper and McShay projecting him going #1 and many experts convinced that Jameis freakin Winston has considerably more talent.

Hell, I hope he succeeds! But my first goal is to see a team I dislike mortgage their future on him and be perennial cellar-dwellers for the next 5-7 season. And I think it's a plausible scenario. Hopefully for him and his nice family, he makes good but the PAC12 isn't the NFL.

What about Ryan Leaf? Lots of experts said he should be the number 1 pick over Peyton Manning. All I know is that he was an easy pick for the Heisman.

I dont think he has the raw muscle mass.. hes certainly tall enough to be a good nfl qb, but he looks so tiny.

Will be an interesting one to watch and see if he can handle it at first

Thats one of the reasons I think he might not make it. Show me another wirey QB that worked. Close is Cunningham years ago but I think Colin Kaepernick is close. He's tall, big arm , fast , athletic. But Colin also gets sacked more than most QBs with that style of play and as you saw last night has to run to be effective and that takes away from his passing game. Colin never learned how to be a pocket passer under pressure before he got to the pros. If you played HS QB and ran a lot and played QB in college and ran a lot ( colin ran the pistol) then it's just tough to get to the NFL and suddenly get the timing needed. You Oregon fans keep talking about how he can run , how he's good at the option. But the QBs who have succeeded in being playoff QBs are not the Cam Newtons , the Vince Youngs the Mike Vicks the RG3s. Its the stiffs like Manning (both) Brady, Big ben, Philip Rivers, and the guys who move well in the pocket like Luck, Aaron Rodgers and Wilson but can still throw from a collapsing pocket. .

Ummmmm the topic is how you think he will be in the NFL. So you kinda have to give your opinion. Then others give theres and you argue.

Ummmmm, I thought that's what we were doing. What did you miss?

Mariota is the epitome of what a college athlete should be. Totally classy and humble. and a terrific athlete.

BUT

He will not translate well in the NFL. Maybe for a year or so but the speed of the NFL will always caught up to system QBs.

I like to chime in from time to time on MM.

What's not to like about him as a bon-fide NFL QB?

He has the size, speed AND pocket passing presence with NFL caliber arm strength. Add in the fact that he can elude and escape pressure is just an added bonus. Plus he doesn't throw INTs.

With that said who would you draft IF you had a choice?

-B Huntley UCLA...still makes bad decisions when under pressure

-S Mannion Oregon State...can't run for shit, but has the golden arm

-The guy from FSU...the only other guy close to Mariota in talent, but likes to throw INTs

Yea it's this kind of thinking that has ruined the careers of many GMs and coaches in the NFL. These teams look at their QB and say they need to be replaced and they go out and draft a guy high with tons of flaws. These glaring flaws are overlooked or they arrogantly believe they can correct them and they draft guys high who would go in the 3rd or 4th round based on talent if they played any other position. These drafting mistakes lead to 5-10 years of terrible football or even worse 5-10 years of mediocre football where you don't get a shot at the guys who actually could turn the franchise into a winner. In almost every circumstance you draft the best player available regardless of position and it is especially true when you don't have much talent. Some people think you draft a QB and build around him. Others think you start with linemen and work your way out. And the craziest of all think you draft to fill holes. But when you take the best player on the board when you draft your chances of picking a great player go way up. The Vikings, Jags and Titans are all at the bottom of the league for similar reasons, they keep missing on QBs. I don't blame you for thinking this way though, most NFL teams seem to do the same thing and it's why only a few teams are true contenders every year, they don't do this kind of shit.

Mariota is a very talented kid. I'm not necessarily betting against him succeeding but based on the system he ran, the history of guys coming from similar systems and the fact that because of that system we have no idea if he can read a defense, I'm not touching him before the 3rd round or so. As far as Winston, he's played in a pro set, he has shown that he can read defenses, and he can even run when called upon. The only phisical flaw I see with him is his slow release which could very well kill his career. Couple that with his immaturity or idiocy, how ever you look at it, and I wouldn't touch him until the 2nd round. But both of these guys end up going in the top 10 for sure, probably top five, possibly top 2 and it will likely be a huge mistake that cripples 2 franchises for 5+ years.

I'm very concerned that the only football fans trying desperately to convince me that Marcus Mariota is the next NFL superstar are all Oregon fans.
