Maye has definitely been up and down this year. Its looking like the Bears could have the first two picks in the draft. Dont see them coming off of Caleb. Maybe they field offers on the Carolina pick.

Im actually good with Howell rn. Things could obviously take a turn but I wouldn't be mad at them if they traded up for the LT from Penn St. and rolled with Howell.
Let me ask you the overriding question at this point in Howell's career. (Also why Rivera should have been dismissed in the off-season) If Howell continues at his current pace, even discounting the Buffalo game, how much do they pay their third-year QB? Do they Lamar him contractually? Do they Geno Smith/Daniel Jones him contractually? Does he go along with any of that or does he command top dollar? We're mere months away from having to deal with these questions.

Third-year QBs look to get paid, next year Howell will be in his 3rd year!
Yup. But he only gets paid if he’s worth paying.

I could be wrong but we dont have to pay Howell until 2026.

Well, hopefully, he's still alive and seeking a new contract! LOL
Let me ask you the same question...
Let's eliminate the Buffalo game and project Howell's performance from the other 3 games over the rest of the season. How much do you pay the third-year guy seeking a new contract? Going rate? Do you Lamar him contractually? How about a new contract in the Geno Smith/ Daniel Jones model?

Agreed, they don't have to pay him until another thing until his contract is up in 2025, but players, especially QBs don't operate that way. While we're all hoping that he settles some questions about the position. He's going to want that new contract long before this contract expires. The organization in that same time frame will consider his higher trade value. If he levels off he'll still want a new contract but his trade value won't be as high. Now if he peters out, there's no real point in keeping him or seeking much in terms of trade.

So you see Sam holding out?

Yup! The contract math is not in his favor and I'm sure that his representatives are paying close attention to what he does this year. They will want to get paid too! Sort of a strike while the iron is hot kind of thing.

So if we get to that point where he's so good he feels comfortable holding out wouldn't the QB problem be solved?

I don't think nor believe that Sam Howell is the long-term answer at QB. He'll be a great bridge guy, in the same way that Alex Smith was in Kansas City. Some here will be absolutely furious that they would want to upgrade the QB position, EB will have no issues making such a move nor should he!
Moving on...

I know that it's been a long time since we've had competent, demanding leadership and it might take a bit of getting used to the upgrading mentality but my faith in Washington fans/ followers/ supporters is unshaken. I know that winning to the point where there becomes talk of deep playoff runs and SB titles isn't completely foreign to them. That said, it all begins with EB becoming HC and instituting his high-demand, fully accountable, "my ass is on the line every day" attitude to the team. I'm also pretty sure that Earvin and Josh recognize that same fire within themselves.

Sty, it’s way too early to even begin to ponder that question. If he is Lamar material, then he gets Lamar pay. not many are Lamar material. I have no idea how Sam will turn out and no one else here does. I’ll make this statement of Sam. He is the best prospect we have had in a long, long while. He has all the tools. But most do. He wasn’t afraid of the moment. He’s worth watching to see how he grows.

I hear ya Sty.....remember i was the only one on this board that wanted Watson besides you. I just like what I've seen from Sam so far. It will play out soon enough.

I have no doubt Watson with EB and these receivers would have flourished. That said his price tag was high. As stated earlier in the thread, having Howell locked up through 2025 on a 5th round pay scale is found money in the NFL. In a perfect world Howell is they guy. Buys us a few years to really put a team around him.

The kid has had five starts. I have no idea what Howell really is. I like what I've see so far though.

Yeah, I repeatedly mentioned that it was way too early for the topic. What I meant about Lamar was the way that they handled his contract.
I disagree with your take on the evaluation of Sam Howell. I also disagree with the prospects that this team had prior to Howell. More teams/organizations ruin QB prospects than develop them properly. Washington isn't an exception to that. That said, he will grow, he will get better and it will be fun watching him get more relaxed in the job, but his tools are what they are, his skillset is what it is and his pedigree is what it will always be. None of that changes with time or experience. What does change is comfort in doing the job and a certain level of proficiency. Proficiency can be measured and one way to do that comes with asking one question... "Is that guy a force multiplier?" ( meaning he makes everyone around him better) Sam Howell operated within the team concept, his skillset fits well within that concept, and he will become comfortable in the job and really proficient while doing it, but when that one question is asked about him the answer is Nope!

Well, you have the worst DLine in the league coming to town. I think your sack numbers will improve a little.
Yeah, they'll probably only give up 3 sacks this game.

On a side note Howell is on pace to be sacked 100+ times this year.

You'd think the Skins would have an assembly line of OTs, OGs n a couple Cs coming in for tryouts.
