The 2017 Dodgers as of mid September were hitting .262 (Rangers at .263 right now) against 4 seam fastballs and made it to the World Series. They also lost 11 in a row in September and 16 of 17 going back to August.

I actually thought he was better earlier this year, but then he went into another very long slump.

He would have been fine to have starting in most of the last several years, but I think we need a different standard now.

You keep implying that because I don't expect him to get better that that means I don't want him to get better. Why do those two things have to be married to each other in your mind?

He has had over 4000 professional plate appearances over the past 8 years. I am basing my expectations on those.

I think he will make a good bench player in this league and I wouldn't mind that happening here.

Did they just somehow win 10 more games than they should have those first 30 games? Are they more of a .500 team?

I guess we will find out over these next 36 games.

I think we’re more the latter than the first. Unfortunately Bochy got conned by the fact that everyone was performing about their actual level and now they’ve reverted to normal and he doesn’t have reservers to replace them and just has to suffer with us.

And if we don’t address the bullpen, add a starter like Montgomery, add a couple of good bats and address a real weak bench this offseason I would be surprised to see him retire

When bats like Jung and Heim are absent from the line-up bad things happen. They were a huge part of our offense that has struggled with their absence. I do believe we would not be losing this badly if both had not been injured.
Yes, we need some additions to the team but we always have and we got them. In addition to our difference makers is DeGrom and Eovaldi. We have the players to be a first place team but not from a hospital bed. Lest you forget.

I don’t have a certain pitcher in mind that’s up to Bochy and Maddux but they better be damn good because with Gray, Heaney and Perez our really bad bullpen is only going to get worse

Yes I was on the fence with Gray. Just notice watching him this year that when he has a bad inning he gives up 3 or 4 runs instead of 1 or 2. As a 4th or 5th starter he is ok but with our offense sputtering right now its tough to give up 5 runs in just 4 innings.
We miss Jung more than I realized and Heim is not right with his injury

What offense? Sure we scored 3 runs but our offense right leaves no room for the starting pitching to have a bad inning or give up 2 or 3 runs. Heim is uncomfortable facing left handed pitching and batting left so he’s basically half a batter. Jung really hurt but the fact we have no consistent replacement for him at the plate is devastating. Which is why we need to seriously consider adding a couple of bats in an outfielder and a good hitting DH for next year so that losing 1 or even 2 solid bats doesn’t leave us with a void like we have now

I agree. I just brought Heim and Jung as examples. Tavares is struggling. Garcia not getting key hits with men on base. Very little from Grossman. This is not what we were use to getting back in April, May and June.
Add a couple of relievers to your wish list of a couple of outfielders in the offseason

My wish list for the offseason includes resigning Montgomery, Stratton, Chapman and at least 2 or 3 more relievers including a frontline closer and a solid hitting LF’er and a quality DH.
