Magic spilled the beans today on First Take about what happened with him in LA. Not often you see FO go public like that about what went on

I'd take it all with a grain of salt. He's obviously spinning the events to clearly make himself look good. He's still the dude that straight up quit in one of the most unprofessional ways you can do it. And if he had such a good and trusting relationship with Jeanie as he's always claimed, there was nothing stopping him from going to her and stamping out these sparks before they catch flame. But he didn't. Given the information we have and what he said today my guess is what happened was this;

He didn't do shit as PBO, at least not in the sense of what PBO actually do (you know, work every day). He was largely absent doing other things but still thought he could dip in, say what he wants done, and it'll be fine. He wanted the glory, but none of the grunt work. But him being away naturally leaves a vacuum. In that vacuum, other people in the organization stepped in to make a play to get things done and things they want (Pelinka, The Rambis Family, other Buss kids, etc). Then when he'd dip back in and see these other people also having opinions, he thought people were trying to undermine him. Well, yes and no. They are trying to go around you but at the same time, if you were there doing your job, there wouldn't be a need for that. It's like I've said the whole time. The Lakers management is a shitshow. Jeanie Buss has no idea what she's doing. She's just letting her friends and people she knows do stuff for the sole reason of she likes them. What should have and needs to happen is she needs to gut the front office, rip it out from the roots, and install someone from OUTSIDE the Lakers to run the team.

Also, I listen to the Dan Lebatard Show and I got a big laugh out of Dan being vindicated. A few months back, he did a story saying Magic was largely absent in his role with the Lakers, not really putting in the work. They played Magic' interview today live on the show and Magic essentially admitted what Dan reported was true and then Dan told a story about Magic calling ESPN to try to kill the story as false. Dan was right the entire time, lol.

As a Laker fan, you would know more about it than I would. Unfortunate. Magic always seemed like such a straight up guy

I had to side eye him when he said he told Jeanie that he makes way more money from his business ventures than he does with the Lakers. So, he was only willing to commit halfway.

I must live a sheltered life because I was unaware that part-time Presdent of Operations positions exist in Corporate America.

Dude gave it up on the Luke firing tug of war, on the kiddie corps being in their feelings for a bit.

But, the funniest part is that he gave up y'all free agency plans....lol

Kyrie and Kawhi?

I didn't watch it live because I abhor First Take but I spent most of the day so far reading transcripts and the parts I heard on LeBatard show (like I mentioned earlier). Besides what you mentioned, my other favorite part was where he claimed the Lakers were ok with him being part time but then would train Pelinka how to be a GM despite himself never working in the front office. Like if you've never been in the front office, how can you train someone to be in the front office all the while not showing up half the time? That was absurd. And if its understood you're not going to be there all the time, how can you be upset when others fill in the role since you're not there all the time? You can't have it both ways.

I dont think Magic Johnson needed much of a reason to quit. A person who is accustomed being the boss doesn't normally adjust to being bosses and if Magic really wanted to work for the Lakers, then he would have sat down and had honest discussions with everyone in the same room at the same time and had an understanding of the power structure. Instead he took the cowards way out and left. As of now Jeanie has decided to run the show with her people in tow as it should be. No more blaming everyone else. Take the responsibility for her own damned company

Vogel is probably the best coach Lebron has had, which is pretty sad. I always wanted to see Lebron coached by an elite coach during his career, I guess I will never see that, but Vogel did some good things in Indiana so maybe he will be elite one day. :noidea:

Life isn't fair. You thought you could post on AG freely, but we kicked you to the curb...Ouchie!

He was talked into taking the job by Jeanie with certain concessions (still taking care of his other businesses, for example). When it wasn't working for him anymore (and really, what purpose is a PBO without any decision-making power?), he decided he was done. I don't blame him whatsoever, as he shouldn't have been the hire in the first place (just like he never should've been hired as a coach). He needed a figurehead type role, and PBO is not remotely that when you have a first time GM hired under you at the same time.

Cowards way out? He found himself in a bad situation and got out. Any power structure that has business people affecting basketball decisions over who they have good relationships is what got someone like Magic into a position he wasn't qualified for in the first place. The Buss children need a veteran basketball mind to put in charge of the basketball side of the business and let him guide that part of the franchise. Office workers, stay the f out of basketball decisions.

Agree. But he never should have taken the job in the first place. He should have been an "advisor/ambassador". Bringing him in for meeting with FA's for a little "star power" should have been the extent of his role.

Yes, it was a cowards way out. He should have gone to Jeanie and told her why he wanted out. At least then it would have given her the opportunity to deal with it in house.

Imo, the only thing more cowardly than how he quit...was his ambush on First Take yesterday.

I hate y'all.

BUT, I love Magic.

So, Coward is too harsh a word for me, even when it's applicable.

He was uber-unprofessional and should never have even been considered for the job.

Jeanie needs to start hiring with her head, not her heart.

Get rid of Rob, the Rambis coalition et al, and get some credentialed professionals to run basketball operations.

She's not Robert Sarver, James Dolan bad.

But, she's nowhere near her Father either.

You take this team stuff too personally IMO. He didn't talk to Jeanie because she would've talked him out of it, just like she talked him into the job in the first place. He quit. It's not because he's a coward and is scared of the job or the reaction he'll get, clearly.

These FO issues are always a reflection of ownership at the top. Dr Buss's kids appear over the heads. Long time Warrior fans know this all to well having to endure the Cohan years.

It's as simple as hiring a true PBO, someone with a track record, and give that person the approval to keep/fire Pelinka and handle the basketball side of the business. And no, Kurt Rambis is not a candidate, nor Pelinka. No more friends/family hires.

Magic is my all time favorite athlete from any sport. I'm really disappointed in how he quit and what he did yesterday. I hate using the word coward when it coms to him, but unfortunately, I can't think of a better one.

I think Jeanie is trying to run things like her father and from what I've heard, a collaboration (which the Rambis', especially Kurt) have been part of that for years. Including with Dr. Buss) the difference was, no one knew how many different folks he was getting input from because he was able to keep it quiet. Also, and this is the other difference, he would take all of that input and he and an experienced basketball person like The Logo or Mitch Kupchak would make the final decision.

According to Pelinka, that's how things are being done with him and Jeanie meeting to make a final decision...but the problem is, he's not an experienced GM.

I don't take it personally at all. It has nothing to do with me.

Imo, it's a cowardly way out. If he was afraid Jeanie would talk him out of it, then he wasn't that convinced that he was making the right move.

Also, if Jeanie had to talk him into it, why was he appearing to be angling for the job when Short Buss was there?

Sorry, but I'm not buying what he says. Especially after what he did yesterday. There was no reason or excuse for that.

Both were cowardly - My take is he already wanted out - I have audited thousands of business which includes stores, manufacturers, contractors and service companies. That's not how to do it. If an officer in title has a problem, he deals with it. In this case Magic was an officer in title only because he is not a stockholder and is not listed as an executive officer on the corporate minutes filed with the state of California. He should have sat down with Pelinka and had a discussion man to man. He said on First take that he was over it - Not true because he was still talking about it and it was obvious that he was still bothered by it - That's not surprising considering he left like a coward and ambushed Jeanie who in my opinion needs to back away from the man as a good friend and stop discussing the Lakers with him. Nothing wrong with being his friends, but after that - I would stop discussing personal matters. That's how I handle my friends and family members. It keeps things going smoothly and without problems
